"35. A 12-volt battery with an internal resistance of 1-Ω resistor. Which of the following is the current in amperes that flows in the circuit."

Answer key says "9" but I am just not getting it. Someone please explain what I am missing? Thanks

There are several mistakes on the opted practice OAT test, and this question is one of them. This test was put up years ago, and nobody ever bothered to fix the errors. It's shameful if you ask me, but you get what you pay for, right?

Thanks for the reply Artic.

I see you post a lot on the boards and I have raed your OAT prep articles, hoping you might lend me some advice.

I have been preparing for the OAT for a few months now, it is this Friday. I am not feeling confident at all in ochem and gen chem. For gen chem I am working through oat destroyer and I struggle on almost every problem. I mean I can do pv=nrt, mole fractions, yields, all that stuff. but the state functions and nmr stuff just mess me up. Think I should push it back if I am having this much trouble?

I think a day or two of solid ochem to try and learn the reactions, catalysts, nomenclature should be okay, and the other sections I should be alright, just gen chem has me worried. thanks!

I was struggling on the destroyer gchem too, but I got 360 on the actual OAT. Destroyer's ochem and gchem questions are a lot more difficult than the real OAT, the questions from the sample test would be a better indicator of the difficulty.

any suggestions on what i should concentrate on for gen/o-chem? more focus on concepts, equations and formulas, sn1sn2e1e1 reactions...?

thanks!

OAT Destroyer, although I did not personally use it, is (according to almost everyone I know who has used it) more difficult than the actual OAT.

It's tough to give advice with respect to rescheduling, but remember that you can always take the OAT a second time if need be. You do, of course, have to reschedule with enough advance notice, so if you were to have any chance of that, you'd probably have to call immediately, or as soon as they open tomorrow. NMR spectroscopy isn't that important, in that yes there should be a couple questions on it, but it's a topic that isn't critical to the understanding of any other topics. Just remember the fundamental point that NMR spectroscopy differentiates between 'different' (i.e. not perfectly 'symmetrical') Hydrogen atoms, or in the case of C-13 NMR spectroscopy, between 'different' Carbon atoms. IR spectroscopy, on the other hand, differentiates between functional groups, a prominent example being hydroxyl groups vs. ketones or aldehydes.

My study advice is this: Know as many of the reagents for O-Chem as possible, know nomenclature and aromaticity, and it helps to know the official names of the more common reactions too. As for general chemistry, it sounds like you know enough that you will probably be fine, because PV=nRT, mole fractions, etc. is a sizeable chunk of that section. Make sure you can handle atomic orbitals and ions, and at that point, just take the test and do your best.

Best of luck Friday!

Ok, so I know that a bunch of mistakes are made on the practice test on the ADA website's test, but where is the place where you can look at the right stuff? I also got the same question wrong with the voltage question, and I heard that there was a thread where someone had posted all the corrections to the test with explanations.
Does someone know what this thread is, and can you put the link on here?
Thanks! 🙂
