physiology books?

O wise SDNers,

So the fall block begins with cardio/pulm/renal. What books did you find useful for class and/or boards (besides 1st aid)? ps: the more diagrams the better, since I am a very strong visual learner.

hell, i'd get both, and the case question book too. not that expensive, and one of the best sets of books for any subject out there

oh yeah, i'm just starting 2nd year in the fall too, but you might want to think about the lippincott pathophys series for each respective block (lilly's pathophysiology of heart disease, etc).

Both books are fine, my suggestion really had to do with if the OP were only going to get one, in which case I recommend the text over the review book ;

The BRS physiology is a fantastic book. I think I had some of those single subject physio books that were great as well -- respiratory, cardiac, renal physiology. Can't for the life of me remember what they had for names though.

I would stay as far away from guyton and hall as possible. Unless of course you have plenty of time to spare. 😱

Costanzo rules. However, I believe Lilly is a must. Lilly is an even better book than Costanzo for second year since it seamlessly weaves physio/pathophysio/and path. You honestly don't even have to read Robbins if you use Lilly for cardio. Costanzo is great for reading up on the physio for all of the rest of the second year systems blocks.

It's ashame that there isn't a Lilly for each systems block.

I like Costanzo BRS for the brief morning read and overview...but for an awesome phys text check out Medical Physiology by Boulpaep. It has excellent diagrams, flow charts, derivations, clinical scenarios, pathways...everything. Ciao.

If you like diagrams I would highly suggest the mother of all physiology books.....Medical Physiology by Walter Boron or as my school called it "The Yale Book". First off, there is no way in hell that you will sit down and read this all the way through. It is encyclopedic and serves as a good reference to Costanzo. It is expensive but you will be able to use it for the next several years. Most of my class was too intimidated by it's size but I used it and finished with the highest score in both the class and on the state wide board exam!

I bought Boron's book & found it to be a huge waste of money. I'm a med school book junkie and this is the only book that I felt I absolutely should not have bought. There was not enough time to do significant readings from it (it took a lot more pages to cover what was clearly & concisely covered by Costanzo) and it was way to detailed. I ended up using Costanzo & doing well in phys without Boron. I sold Boron to some other poor sucker on amazon.

I used Berne & Levy for physiology and did quite well. For respiration I used West (which I sometimes regret).

Many of my classmates used Guyton and Hall and were satisified with it.

Like I said, it is big but more comprehensive than costanzo. Dr. Mom is right - not everyone should use this book. Check it out at a bookstore for yourself.

The Boron text is well written, a great reference, and has excellent diagrams. costanzo is good for a quick read and the basics but lacks in essential areas (i.e. acid/base, renal, etc.)
