I have found many inconsistencies regarding the development of a ToM and empathy, and the loss of egocentric thought. The inconsistencies are primarily regarding the stages to which Piaget attributes these phenomena.

Does Piaget believe that children develop ToM during the preoperational stage, or during the concrete operational stage?

  1. Sensorimotor: 0-2 years old: child learns separation of self from outside world + does not fully grasp object permanence + begin to acquire language.
  2. Preoperational: 2-7: understands object permanence + child uses language, though very literally + pretend play + does not understand conservation + egocentric thinking + begin to develop theory of mind--the prerequisite for empathy.
  3. Concrete operational: 7-12: understands conservation + inductive reasoning + understands the difference between their thoughts and others'.
  4. Formal operational: 12+: thinks logically in abstract terms + inductive/deductive reasoning + post-conventional moral reasoning.
