Hey all, I had a couple ideas regarding my diversity essay and I was wondering if anyone could help me narrow down my choices.

1. Born and raised in an urban town in Argentina. My whole life I had been living decently well. I went to a private school, my parents owned an apartment, and both had full time jobs. Upon immigrating to the United States, my family and I shared a tiny apartment for the 6 of us. We ate over carboard boxes, were ineligible for insurance for a couple months and could barely afford new clothing. My immigration experience has given me insight onto the various living conditions due to economics, and as a result I am more able to relate to the less fortunate (ie. my volunteering time at a soup kitchen).

2. As an immigrant, my English skills were very rudimentary. Students made fun of my accent, while one teacher suggested I be held back a grade so I could improve on my English. I had spent around 4 years taking English as a Second Language classes. The combination of my perseverance and support from my teachers allowed me to succeed academically and excel in English classes. Consequently, I can empathize to the difficulties a student can face in regards to achieving an education. Due to this, I have devoted my time teaching Organic Chemistry and also teaching the MCAT for a test prep company.

3. Both my parents work full-time and the rest of my family still lives in South American. Being the eldest of five siblings I grew up with a maturity to be a responsible caretaker, from having to pick up my rebellious teenage brother from a party to taking my sick toddler sister to the doctor while my parents worked. When my mother had breast cancer, I transferred to a school closer to home so I could continue to support my siblings. I became accustomed to prioritizing others over myself. Due to this, I have pursued to volunteer in soup kitchens and hospitals as a way to confirm this desire. It is through a career in medicine I can continue to serve those in need.

Thank you for any thoughts/suggestions!

I think you can probably choose 3 while weaving in those details of 1 & 2, mentioning your immigration and ESL experiences.
