Hi,
I'm a pre-med and was wondering if you all could help me out. I'm choosing between med schools and don't really know the best factors for getting a good residency. Some things I have heard earlier:

usmle scores
location
price
scutwork amount
hands-on clinical work
school's reputation in field you want (basically school's specialty)
people that place into school's own residency for the field you want
who writes 3rd year evals
research

Is there anything you would add/remove from this list based on your experiences as residents/ former med students? This is considering equal happiness everywhere. Thanks!!

THIS.

location
price
scutwork amount
hands-on clinical work

None of these have anything to do with getting into residency.

school's reputation in field you want (basically school's specialty)

Medical school is designed to teach you the foundations of medicine. You have no realistic idea of what you want to go into and the majority of med students who think they do, change their minds. Do not select a medical school based on some preconceived notion of what you want to do. The only exceptions are for students who want to do a competitive specialty and go to medical school at someplace without any department or faculty in that specialty - you'll need to do away rotations to get LORs.

people that place into school's own residency for the field you want

Nope. Not really relevant.

Only important if you are pursuing MD/PhD or a highly competitive specialty.

Go to the best and cheapest medical school you can, and study your arse off for Step 1. These 3 things will make the most significant impact when it comes to helping you match into your residency of choice and making your life better.

Closing...because I see you have cross posted this in the Clinical Rotations forum (in violation of the SDN TOS). Users who want to respond can do so there (although it should be moved out of that forum into the Pre-Med forum).
