Are programs still sending out interview invites or can we effectively say they're done? Also, will all programs send rejection emails or they just don't provide any communication if they're not sending an invite

I feel like they are done but not sure, just a feeling. I heard that they sent invites in september last year so we may expect to receive a few more. btw I have not heard anything from upmc, chop, cincinnati. Has anyone heard from them?

I haven’t heard from Cincinnati, Colorado, Phoenix or Arkansas yet.

I’m not involved in fellowship applications or invites by intention, but I know I’ve heard it said amongst my colleagues who are that this year is the first they recall where there was a not insignificant number of reapplicamts from prior years.

I don’t know what that specifically means as far as interview offers, but it’s clear that the global number of applicants is increasing and while interview spots (even for COVID where they are expanded) are relatively fixed. The problem with virtual interviews additionally is since they require no cost or effort on the applicants, you have a lot of applicants who use interviews to sight see but have no actual intention of going.

Do you think we can expect invites in late sept, oct and nov as well given I still haven't heard back from many programs I applied for

I don't specifically know when invites go out because like I've said, I've absolved myself of that process, but I will say it seems unlikely to have invites in November when we discuss rank lists in November for a December match. I will also say, that toward the end of the interview season, people tend to cancel interviews, which in the era of no travel, tends to work well for those waitlisted. Since we only discuss those who got an interview, it's better late than never. There are also applicants who interview early who leave no remarkable impression.

Wish I had any communication at this point rather than being left on read by half the programs I applied to lol

I’m not sure if this is moot at this point but has anyone sent emails/letters of intent/interest? If you did, did you get a response?

No response to the one LOI that I sent, although a couple of my PICU attendings had mentioned that LOIs are actually somewhat looked down/frowned upon in the PICU world :/

A PICU attending in our program said if you don't have a stellar profile but aiming for programs across the country, LOIs stating your interest and willingness to move might work at times. I only sent one LOI to a program I've been put on waitlist but no response so far

Rejected by CHOP and Colorado today. Feeling like this year is a blood bath...
Heard that CHOP received around 180 applications this year with only 5-6 spots on offer. Top programs like Boston Children's, CHOP, Johns Hopkins which are inherently geared towards research over clinical experience are either aiming to get applicants from big name residency programs with stellar profiles or those with PhDs and exceptional research

Did anyone got put on waitlist or rejected from CHLA?

Hi guys! So I have a couple of questions and would be SUPER grateful if I could get some answers.
1. Is there a chance of programs still sending out invites?
2. The waitlisted programs- I seem to be adding only that to my list and barely any actual interviews. How many of these waitlisted programs Actually send out invitations?

I received one invite last week and still haven't heard anything from several others. Hopefully, they send out some decision soon

None which have put me on waitlist sent out invites so far but my attendings say due to the high volume of applicants this year, the likelihood of expecting an invite from program which put you on waitlist is relatively low

Do you guys write follow up emails like a thank you email after interviews?

Whether you want to write emails or not is up to you. Their impact is negligible. The only time it may matter is if you write a very specific email to the PD if it is truly a top choice AND you are their top choice anyway. But generally in the rank list discussion, that usually gets lost in the noise anyway.

Are the invites still coming in? Mine seem to have stopped, and this is very concerning!

I’m sure everyone will get this info sooner or later but figured I would share

How many interviews have each of you received?
(I applied to 16 total programs— received 5 interviews total, and 2 waitlisted).

At long last, I have finally received a coveted rejection from CHLA! Only 4 more programs that have ghosted me to go!

How many interviews have each of you received?
(I applied to 16 total programs and received 5 interviews total).

I applied to 21, got 6 interviews and 3 "waitlist" spots.

I applied to 25; 9 interviews, 7 rejections, 1 waitlist, 8 no response.

I'll say this for all current (and future) applicants... have some path forward and mean it...

Have a clear understanding of what you want to do and why (besides turning up Norepinephrine and putting your stethoscope on the patient)...

You want to run a hospital?! Awesome, why and what do you need to achieve that?!

You want to run a lab?! Awesome, why and what do you need to achieve that?!

You want to do clinical trials?! Awesome, why and what do you need to achieve that?!

You want to be in actual medical education (and not just teaching residents what DKA is... cause frankly... no one gives a sh-t)?! Awesome, why and what do you need to achieve that?!

You want to be medical director?! Well... first get your head checked... then... awesome, why and what do you need to achieve that?!

Nothing is worse than having no ambitions and saying you goal in life is "to be in academics and teach"... that's like the answer of 95% of the applicants and it doesn't help you in any regard. In fact, that answer is almost certainly going to get you to the bottom of the rank list. I'm telling you this to help you... BUT, you also need a passion that you can use to 1) promote yourself when going for a job and 2) actually lead to a promotion in your organization because you kick ass in whatever.

For better or worse, Peds Critical Care has become more competitive in the past 5 years or so. So you need to differentiate yourself from the pack. And having a clear and dedicated interest outside of patient care... is the way to sell it...

Is anyone still waiting to hear from UMiami Jackson Health or did all of you either received invitations or rejections?

Regarding aspirations that are compelling to programs like these listed above, would you consider wanting to be an ECMO director (i.e. responsible for center’s operation, assuring appropriate performance, QI, data submission to ELSO), or wanting to participate in endeavors related to PICU transport to be appropriate ambitions?

These are some of my interests right now, but not sure if these are enough to set me apart, or if I should build on or even explore outside of these.
Yes, those a career positions and you can do scholarly activity related to those things. It looks better f you’ve already done something related to those things when you apply, but obviously not every residency has an ECMO program. But stating the specifics you mentioned certainly shows some thought behind it and having some sort of plan and conveying with interest helps you standout as an applicant compared to those who have no plan. Whether or not any of that comes to fruition in the long term is a much different discussion, but you got to get your foot in the door in the first place right?

Does anyone know about Tower Health's Program at St. Chris hospital in Philly. You can't rank them at this moment.

Are you guys interested in sharing interviews experiences? I’m having hard time feeling the programs through Zoom!
Yeah I’m struggling with my rank list as some of the places I expected to love prior to interview just seemed “ok” afterwards, and that includes some of the fancy places that everyone says are amazing so now I’m confused.

Just curious- have you all registered on NRMP? I was waiting to get done with interviews but I’m wondering if that would be too late?

Have people been getting love letters from programs? Are you reaching out to your top programs?

there is no harm in registering with NRMP now. That way you can get the payment done with and start working on the rank order list. It's the same number as when you did it for residency match so it's a super easy registration.

Can you guys provide some insight on the factors you're considering while putting together a match list? With Zoom not providing a realistic feeling of what the program feels like, I'm having a hard time figuring out the list

In addition to the above, I would include cardiac exposure. In many places cardiac ICUs are run by cardiologists and cardiology fellows. It's a different approach and you will learn a lot, but I do think having PICU fellows primarily running the cardiac kids is better learning for you. You can and will work closely with the cardiology fellows/attendings and you will learn tons from each other, so that relationship is extremely important. After fellowship you may decide you don't want to do cardiac, but the physiology you learn there is excellent and the experience taking care of post op hearts is invaluable.
