Hi Everyone!

I am struggling with deciding between these schools. I am familiar with all three of the locations, except Louisville. I am also concerned about cost of living! I was grateful to be given scholarships at Iowa, Pitt and BU! I would prefer to attend school at a supporting and non-competitive environment. I also would like to be done after dental school, I do not want to be in a position where I need to apply for a GPR. I would really appreciate it if anyone could give their input and/or opinions!!!! Thank you!

*I have had more interactions with Pitt and Iowa so I have more to say about those two schools*

School 1: Pitt
OOS
Pros:
  • Faculty was really awesome and helpful and care about the student’s experience and will make adjustments based on feedback
  • Faculty I interviewed with were really great and I think I would learn a lot from them
  • Selective courses
  • Ability to be well-rounded due to all the locations
  • Special needs clinic
  • Would not have to adjust to a new city/environment
  • Seem strong research-wise
  • Public health certificate
Cons:
  • A lot of students specialize...I do not feel like competing with peers
  • Students looked exhausted esp. D1s and D2s, has expressed the rigor significantly more than students at other schools
  • I feel like some students were hesitant answering some questions, I don't know how to explain this sorry
School 2: Iowa
OOS
Pros:
  • I like the structure of the curriculum
  • Current students were very nice and helpful to me and they did not seem stressed or say that the program was unreasonably hard
  • Prepare students well for GENERAL DENTISTRY
  • Early clinical exposure
  • Clinical extramural programs
  • Facility is really nice
  • Decent tuition and cost of living (even OOS)
  • Interesting research projects
  • Students talked really great things about the faculty and vice versa
Cons:
  • Would be hard to get out of the state if needed to do so in a short time frame
  • Not as much diversity as I would like in the student body
  • Cold!
School 3: Louisville
OOS
Pros:
  • People did seem really friendly
  • Large emphasis on technology
  • A lot of opportunities to get involved in at FQHC
  • Many academic support programs that I can take advantage of
  • Seemed very relaxed (faculty and students)
  • Care about student wellbeing and success
Cons:
  • I have not been to Louisville/Kentucky and I am a little concerned
  • Tuition is ~double compared to in-state which sucks

School 4: BU
Pros:
  • Teach a lot of new technology while also teaching the old ways
  • Lots of community outreach
  • Just finished construction (new clinic and sim clinic)
  • A lot of resources academically and dental technology related
Cons:
  • Seems like an competitive environment (many students choose to specialize)
  • Boston is expensive

thank you so much for your help!!! i really really appreciate it you are amazing
one thing that you missed on iowa is that they are EXTREMELY supportive of their students
they have tutoring available and even emotional support
ask student services or check their website for more info

Have you asked Iowa if they offer any scholarships at all? I heard Texas schools give you a scholarship for at least the 1st year to make your OSS tuition the same as IS tuition.

How did you find out about this? I am trying to find a list of dental schools which are very supportive of their students and where there is not a super competitive atmosphere. I know Tufts is very supportive because I talked to a student from there and he told me how they have yoga classes incorporated into their schedule to help with mental health and that they care about their students a lot.
