congrats to all of you on getting into Pitt! Hope you'll decide to come here next year. . .

What I can say to you guys is it sure is a great place for learning medicine. you'll realize how great it is especially 3rd and 4th year when you're on the wards and interviewing for residencies.

Could you by any chance elaborate more on this? What makes the clinical experience at Pitt unique and great? Also, how reputable is PittMed to top residency directors?

UPMC is top notch in terms of facilties, and strength of most if not all departments. I've been really lucky to be taught by some awesome residents and attendings all year (I'm a 3rd year now). The unpleasant ones are few and far between. I've felt well prepared for clinical years from the 1st 2 years (and I was a pretty avg scorer on preclinical exams, and I'm pretty lazy when it comes to studying). I've also valued the extent to which Pitt Med goes to diminish feelings of having to compete with your classmates. I've felt a lot of collegiality with most fellow med students (except for the very few that insist on making themselves feel smarter by undermining colleagues, and every med school will have a bunch of those types--I just try to avoid them).

There is a lot of great faculty who are very supportive of students and very willing to give advice whenever you need it. For example, I recently needed some urgent advice about a career decision. I was facing a deadline, and was frantically emailing attendings that I thought would be able to help me. To give you an example of how much they care, this one CCM attending responded first thing the very next morning. Even though he was teaching a 4th yr CCM rotation at the time, as well as taking care of pts in the ICU, and having to go out of town early that afternoon, not only did he give me his pager # to page him before he left town, HE actually paged ME later that morning to make sure I got his message. I couldn't meet him at the time he was available to meet me, so we worked it out that he would page me when he was done teaching the class, so he could advise me over the phone while he was driving to the airport. And he gave me some great, valuable advice that later clinched my decision for me.

Another case that totally touched me, was this anesthesia attending that I also got in touch with for advice for the same decision. So, not only was he enthusiastic to meet with me, even though he couldn't answer my questions, instead of just giving me some names of contacts and sending me on my way, he was like, "So I know just the person you need to talk to about this. In fact, he's in his office right now, let's go talk to him!!"

We also have an incredible new sim center for teaching resuscitation and what to do when a patient starts crashing, and we also go there during the anesthesia rotation to learn to do things like intubate and do bag-mask ventilation and work the anesthesia machines on dummies. It has been an invaluable resource for me. From what I heard while interviewing for research fellowships, even places like Hopkins don't have such a thing. Med students from other schools were jealous about it when I was telling them about it.

4th years keep telling us 3rd years that we don't fully realize how great Pitt is until we hit the interview trail for residency. From what I hear, Pitt Med is highly respected by PDs, and students have matched very well from what i have seen.

Awesome!

However, I am skeptical about brownies that others make....My "friend" made a batch of fudge mint brownies once and lets just say that that effects were not pretty!

See ya'll this weekend!

I am kinda excited about the Casino Night.

I wish I could be there because I'm pretty sure I'm going to Pitt, but they picked the absolute worst weekend to have a 2nd look. Anyway, have a great weekend, and I hope to see you all at Pitt next year!

Sure thing. I only stayed for the first day of festivities, so my opinion may not be the most accurate, but here's what I thought. The school itself, including the immediate area of the main UPMC buildings on "the Hill," the brand new and improved sim center, and the vast majority of creative and amiable faculty/students that I met were all above repute (oh, I can't forget to give props to the gym either, since they gave us such a labored tour of the facility  ). The general atmosphere of the school was very welcoming, but at the same time I can't be so naive to think at least some of that wasn't in effort to recruit people on the fence between schools to come to Pitt.

Things that I didn't like as much: I was severely underwhelmed by Oakland, where my student host lived... kinda rundown and scary; and the accessibilty of the downtown area can be cumbersome if you don't have a car.

I wasn't around on Saturday, so maybe some of the other sdn'ers I met at Pitt could add some thoughts. There were more than a few there. Nice meeting y'all. :) Hope this helped somewhat, dsp.

Alright, its like 2am Monday, and I just got home from Pitt's 2nd look. Wuzzup to everyone I saw there (hapkidochic, quideam, Flash, linus, rocco, Sachin, raincrew, and Mythili) - if I missed anyone, sorry.

Anyway, I am really glad that I went. Here is what happened:

Thursday night: Those of us who got to Pittsburgh on Thursday night went out to a bar in Shadyside with a bunch of 1st years. Many 1st years came and I was surprised by how laid back they were. Really fun people.

Friday: Began with nice lunch (I can't really comment much on this b/c I woke up late and totally missed it). After lunch, tour of the simulation labs and the gym. We actually got to play with the simulation mannequins (putting masks on, shocking it, intubating it, etc.) Then, most of us went to a happy hour at this mexican restaurant/bar. At night we went to the Hard Rock: the food wasn't all that great but it gave us a lot of time to get to know the other prospectives and current students. After dinner, we went to a bar called the Doc's (Doc's Place?) and just got wasted. I personally had a great time at Doc's.

Saturday: Bagel breakfast with performance/presentations by the PalPittations, current students, and faculty following it. Lunch was Pizza in Scaife following the presentations. Then we went of a tour of the city. The tour was probably a good 2 hours in length and we got to see most, if not all, of Pittsburgh. We finished the tour at the Waterfront where there are stores and restraurants. At night, we went to the Casino Night (a fundraiser for AMSA), which was held at a house of current students. Casino Night closed around 10pm and some of us went to a Club. Afterwards, we went to a diner and just ate and talked. From what I know, those who didn't go to the club remained at Greg's place and pretty much crashed there.

Overall, I had a great great time. We pretty much drank the whole weekend... no more drinking for me for a while. One thing I really learned from the 2nd look is that Pitt people (students, staff, and faculty) are really non-snobbish and friendly. In my opinion, Pitt's strength are the people (students esp.) and the simulation lab. There are other good things about Pitt, of course. But, I personally feel that these two are greatest strengths of Pitt.

I was a big fan of the city when I visited Pittsburgh for interview, but maybe I became less so after this weekend. The rent is cheap and there is plenty to do, it seems, but for some reason this weekend didn't add to my original love for the city I felt at the interview. (Most people I've talked to told me that it is a good place to go to school (study), but that they have no desire to stay after graduation)

Sorry if my writing is messy. I am really tired. I hope it helps for people who are trying to figure out what happened at the second look.

GTea summarized the weekend really well... I was really on the fence between Pitt and Sinai before attending the second look and afterwards was just blown away by Pitt's facilities (Sim Lab, extremely strong departments and hospitals) and its very collegial atmosphere between students and faculty. One curriculum change that's pretty cool is that next year they're starting clinical clerkships in the spring (I believe it's April) of second year, allowing students more time to take electives in other specialties before applying for the Match.

The only possibly negative thing I can think about PittMed is the surrounding area in Pittsburgh, although when they took us on a tour of Pittsburgh it seemed that the city is actually pretty diverse and has a bunch of areas to hang out at. I was pretty hesitant about Pittsburgh before coming and was pleasantly surprised by the stuff there is to do (i.e. bars, clubs, the waterfront, the strip district, Shadyside). It's still no NYC, but it's definitely better than where I'm at currently (Charlottesville).

All in all, I'm hoping to visit Sinai this weekend and get a feel for how things are there before making a decision. A lot of people I talked to at the end of the second look said they were very convinced to attend Pitt; the second look crew definitely did a good job at selling the school to everyone. It really sucks that Sinai is not having a second look this year, oh well.

I agree with most of what's been said by Sachin and Gtea. I unfortunately missed the simlab, which everyone is raving about, but the rest of the weekend was impressive. I loved meeting all you sdners, and I really agree that the students were the most attractive part about the school. Granted we probably see some of the more outgoing and involved students in the first year, but if the prospectives were any indication, Pitt is definitely a place at which I could be happy.
I actually found (despite the gruelling bus tour) that the city was pretty charming and there was plenty to do for a med student. I don't anticipate having a ton of free time anyway, but for the night or two a week that we have to get out, Pitt has plenty to suffice in terms of the bar/cultural scene.

Right now I'm kind of at the whim of a waitlist at a school that has the draw of being close to my g/f and family, but I hope to sort through that mess this week. Overall, I'm very much drawn to Pitt and honestly thank everyone on here for making my decision a little more complicated.

the weekend was great. I loved everything about it. I was actually very pleasantly surprised by the city (and i'm from san francisco!). there are a bunch of unique neighborhoods that each has something different to offer. Ithink the city definitely has enough to keep a med student happy for years.

After leaving this weekend i was very torn between pitt and a uc davis. But after giving it much thought on the plane on the way back to california, i've decided on pitt! I'm very excited. I hope i'll be seeing many of you in a few months!

hey guys, thanks for the posts- wish I could've made it to the 2nd look.

did they provide anymore info on the curriculum changes?

the earlier clinicals i think are great- is that definitely a go for next year?

also, i heard they're getting rid of honors (having just pass/fail)- any word on that?

would love to hear of any other changes i missed.

thanks;

The only other info they provided was that the biochem and molecular bio courses would have more clinical correlations. The early clinicals are a definite go for next year. I didn't hear anything about them getting rid of honors for next year; as far as I know that's not being changed.

Yup, they took time out during the introductory lunch session to review the curriculum changes. I really, really like what they've done. They'll be starting clinical rotations before the end of second year now, giving students more time to decide on a residency choice before they apply in the fourth year. And it's definite for the 2004 entering class. I didn't hear anything on changes in the H/P/F system, but I may have just zoned out from all the food I ate at the buffet.

thanks for all the info! does anyone have any more information on the changes for getting to clerkships earlier in 2nd year? (ie a website link about it?)// hope to hear back from that, and if it went from h/p/f to p/f that would be just another plus.. does anyone have any info about the md/mph program, or if the school of public health is any good, btw? thanks!

Dsp, I don't know much about the advanced clinicals other than it's due to start 2 months earlier than previously. Apparently we would still have up to 7 weeks to study for the boards, which though I don't know much comparatively, sounds immense.

I think I only heard in passing this weekend the rumor about the switch to p/f, but maybe someone else can comment?

In terms of the combined program, I rarely found anyone who knew anything about it. They do have a decent school of public health, but one student I talked to said it is probably better to just do the degree either before or after school. It doesn't sound like an option that is pushed heavily.

Hey everyone!!!!! I'm absolutely psyched about Pitt!!! I loved it during my interview, and the second look weekend definetely reinforced it for me. I won't go into details because a bunch of folks have already posted, but i'll just add in my vote for Pitt :). I met some great people - interestingly, there were about 10 SDNers; I think that 'outsiders' may have thought that we were a cult :D.

Mythili, Wardens, Hapkidochick, Sachin, The Flash (which I will call you forever), Linus, and everyone else... (GTea - I know you're not going :()... I hope to see you guys at Pitt next year!

sorry, didn't want to spread a rumor-
one of the 1st years on my interview day said the school was planning on getting rid of honors- not sure if it's decided, or whether it's true or not.

thanks again for all your updates from the past wknd.
