I'll be starting my internship at West Penn in July. Can anyone suggest a nice area to live in close proximity to the hospital? I heard some good things about the Southside, Shadyside, and Squirrel Hill. Any recommendations?

You just named the 3 best areas to live that are affordable and relatively close to the hospital.

Pittsburgh is an awesome city!! West Penn is located in Bloomfield, the little Italy of Pittsburgh. There are some decent places to live in Bloomfield, but at night the neighborhood can get a little sketchy. Shadyside is the shee-shee place to live with nice shopping and nightlife, but I think the apartments are really overpriced because of the location. Plus shadyside borders a really bad neighborhood and two of my classmates have had their apts broken into and one guy was knocked unconscious and mugged. I am more partial to the Squirrel Hill/Point Breeze area. Neighborhood is more family oriented, parking is free, and area is very safe. Southside is hip and fun, but a little grungy and a long commute in the morning. Friendship and Morningside are kind of up and coming areas that are pretty cheap.

we bought a place near the south side (near balwin/whitehall). if you are looking for buying/building a new house...i can help...that's what we are doing.

WPH is right on Liberty Ave.... I think Shadyside would be your best bet if you want to live close to the hospital, but still be far enough away to do stuff in your free time. Southside and Sq. Hill would be longer commutes (but not by much). Not sure If I can list specific apts, but you can PM me for more info. I'm at UPMC Presby and live in Shadyside. My apt. is really nice and is walking distance to Walnut st. and 2 big grocery stores. It probably takes me 5 mins to drive to West Penn (with traffic).

I live in the Southside and I love it here. Just make sure you live in the flats and not on the slopes and the commute to WPH will be fine. I'll be starting intern year there as well. I'm currently doing rotations there right now and it only takes me about 10 minute drive, maybe 15 minutes at most with traffic.

Southside also has a newly developed area (southsideworks.com) which is very nice and the new hotspot for shopping. I'm actually living in a new apartment complex called Flats at Southside Works. The only con about the area is that it can get a bit noisy on the weekends due to the numerous bars and motorcycles that drive through the area at times. The area is relatively safe though, my place particularly and also well-lit. From where I live, it's about a 5 minute drive to PNC bank, post office and grocery store. Theather and shops are just outside the door.

I agree witht the above post...Shadyside can be a little overpriced and it does border a ghetto neighborhood. Same with Bloomfield. While living close to the hospital is a plus, the homes and apartments there tend to be a bit older and sometimes run down.

is it just me or is all of pittsburgh a little random? for ex. you could walk past a bmw, lexus and then a beat up chevy down the same street in the same neighborhood. that's the only thing that freaks me out. not that i drive a bmw or lexus, i'm a corolla girl. but there's ghetto mixed with sophisticated.

Lived in Shadyside for the year. I loved the convenience to the hospitals of Oakland, the amount of restaurants in walking distance, the pretty tree lined streets, and the nice neighborhood bar scene. But, it was too quiet a neighborhood for me.

I'm moving away soon, after internship, but if I was staying I'd DEFINITELY move to the South Side. It just has more energy, diversity, and vibrance. Shadyside is nice, but unless it's Saturday afternoon and sunny, you won't see people out and about on Walnut (and on those sunny Saturdays, it's 28-35 year old couples with strollers). Southside has restaurants, bars, clubs, clothing stores, a great cineplex, chain stuff for the unoriginal (Cheesecake Factory, Urban Outfitters, etc.), and boutiques and vintages stores. If you're single and under 30, that's the place to be in Pittsburgh.

Later,

Welcome to WPAHS (whip-a** as we call it) and the 'Burg!

I personally love living in Squirrel Hill. I can walk a block to my bank, Giant Eagle, Chinese food, etc. No, it's not the place to be in terms of nightlife. I would agree that the South Side is better for all that, but I love my neighborhood. It has a great, diverse population and everything I need for day-to-day kinda stuff. People walk around at virtually all hours and in all weather.

I lived for six months downtown (dahntahn for Pittsburghers) at Lincoln at North Shore. It was cool, and safe but expensive. I could walk to the Point or to the Strip or PNC Park on the weekend, etc and I was right on the river.

There are tons of different housing options. And really, almost everywhere is within a 20 minute drive.

I've really grown to like it in Pittsburgh. Hope you do too! Welcome!

do any of you guys know of open hospitalist positions in pittsburgh? i'm looking for one for this upcoming year before i start my fellowship there. i was debating between a research year and hospitalist...but i do need a salary to start paying off loans. any help would be appreciated! thanks!

I live in Bloomfield just 1-2 minute's walk away from West Penn. It's not a fancy neighborhood and I agree the houses are on the old side, but I haven't found it sketchy either (speaking as a single female). My perspective may be skewed though having come from North Philly/Germantown. It's nice to have the small Friendship Park next door and I love the tons of restaurants and bars on Liberty Avenue.

Many residents do live in Shadyside and Squirrel Hill, and the Southside's certainly an option as well (forget downtown IMO - not enough happening to justify the price). Everything does seem to be within 20 minutes by car - just make sure you don't have to go through a tunnel to get to the hospital!
