Hi, out of all the activities, I can't think of a good one to put down for phi beta kappa. Just wondering for those who are a member of pkb, what did you write for the description beside it's an honor society?
thanks

None.
I had:
PKB HS.Period

Because I did nothing besides paying the fee and getting the certificate (did not even attend the induction ceremony).

Phi Beta Kappa is well known and well respected in academic circles. Just state that you are a member of Phi Beta Kappa on your application.

I believe there is a legal doctrine that applies:

Res Ipsa Loquitor

The Thing Speaks for Itself

Correct. It is a principle of tort law. First year law students become familiar with res ipsa loquitor in their first year torts class. Nice, most med students would not have a clue about res ipsa loquitor. Law2Doc studied res ipsa loquitor many years ago when he was a pup. It kind of rolls off the tongue and sounds cool.

well it might be relevant to write when you were inducted, as a junior or a senior.

Daisy, you make a valid point, top one percent of your class as a junior vs. top 10 percent as senior. But I doubt that most ad com members will understand the subtleties, and those that do, might be annoyed that you are being so precise. I would just say PBK, and let it go at that. But congrats on being inducted as a junior. A rare honor, indeed.

For my AMCAS I did exactly as stated above. I just mentioned the category as awards/honors (or whatever it is) and simply said "Phi Beta Kappa -- Inducted in Junior Year" and made sure I put the date as 2006-2007 (my junior year).

PBK is universally recognized among academia, and it's basically the only worthwhile honor society AFAIK, since it has a fairly rigorous selection process.

I'm trying to decide if I want to get inducted, and I probably will, but was is the advantage of doing so if you are going into a field like medicine?

It's well respected in academia, and presumably adcoms who see PBK on your app will recognize that you are a well rounded student. You will be able to put it on your CV. It creates opportunities for you to network with fellow PBK members. Those things alone to me are worth the initiation fee (which, by the way, some undergrad institutions will pay on your behalf).

PKB's description

I would caution you to list it as PBK or Phi Beta Kappa and not PKB or Phi Kappa Beta, as the latter, to my knowledge, doesn't exist.

PBK - so selective that our name gets spelled correctly 90% of the time! (Eat it, Lambda Pi Eta!)🙂

So you are going to get Bs so that you can purposely avoid PBK? I dont think I need to explain why that makes absolutely no sense. If you get selected and don't want to be inducted, just decline the offer and dont pay the fee.

haha i thought the same thing, but multiple people did it so i just let it go.
