Hi SDN-community,

I am a student of Media Technology and have to do some ECG-measurements (for computing the heart rate) during a studies project (so it is not much medical, but we do some tests on heart-rate computation).

Therefore I have a prototypical device (manufactured by a small company in Germany) and the manufacturer told me to place the 3 electrodes on the manubrium sterni, the left side of the chest (around the height of the 9th rip) and the ground on the nape (well, the bone there, I think it is it the Cervical vertebrae). But the manufacturer could not tell me details.

But I have to explain some details in my written explanation on my experiments on that and cannot find any information. Does anybody know, where I can get some basic information on this kind of ECG-placement (I know that the 12-Lead system is "normal", but that there are reduced possibilities as CS5, MCR5, CM5, MC5, CB5, CC5, ... but I cannot find much on that).

Therefore I would be really happy, if someone can give me some tips on the ECG-placement the manufacturer is suggesting and maybe some information that I might start looking up?

I'm really happy on any answer ... and thanks for that also in advance.

I have never heard of a 3-electrode system where the electrodes are places where you describe. I've never heard of placing one on the nape of the neck, which sounds like what you are describing...

Typically, with a three-electrode system (which is appropriate for measurements of heart rate), you place one on each of the arms/shoulders, and the third on one side of the trunk (e.g. on the right side of the ribcage).
I have never heard about placement of ECG electrodes on the nape of the neck either (could that be a misunderstanding?).
