Hey is there ways to buy airline tickets so that if something should arise, I could switch or cancel plane tickets. Please let me know. Thank you.

I would bid on priceline with an additional small premium to factor in unforseen cancellation. But not sure if changes of dates for the same price will be taken care of that way. Check it out.
 
on orbitz.com, there was an option to allow switchies. not exactly sure how much it was though.
 
Try Southwest Airlines fully refundable tickets. I fly Southwest all the time. The only downside is they don't fly into every city.
 
some (if not most) allow you to postpone your flight, and charge you 50 dollars plus the price difference for a future flight within a 1 year period.

I've done this before with alaska airlines..

im now a delta airlines fan... i have 15k miles left before I get a free flight woohoo 😳
