Playing the wait list game

I have a feeling that getting into the school of my choice will be a war of attrition. I'm often asked in interviews about where else I'm applying and where their school is on my list. I think they don't think I'm sincere - even when I am!

In particular I got this vibe at Rochester (wait-list) and Jefferson (Alternate List), my 2 & 3 respectively. How can I let schools know that I'm serious about them short of sending a letter of intent?
