Hey guys,

I am new to this forum and have spent a good amount of time the last few hours looking through all the information on this forum to get a better idea of what an mph is. My plan is to go to med school and originally that is what I was going to be doing come fall, but due to personal and family issues I will not be able to and will have to push this back a year, so I wanted to do a 1-year mph program which I had planned on doing later on. I have my MCAT score but no GRE. I will also be graduating at the beginning of august (after this summer, not spring).
I wanted to know:
a) which schools have a 1-year program?
b) which schools can I still apply too? (I will need to sign up and take the GREs and submit my application, can be done hopefully in a week or 2 max)
c) which schools are relatively cheaper? (I am an Illinois resident)

Again guys thank you so much for your help, I know that most of this information is posted but I am running out of time and so decided to take the short cut to save what precious little time I have and ask all of you. Thanks a lot!

sorry about the double post

a) 1 year mph programs are hard to find if you don't already have an MD....personally the only 1 yr program i applied to was dartmouth and then chose a 2 year program instead to get a more complete experience.

b) I was in the same boat as you and ended up applying only to schools that accepted the MCAT because I was too lazy to take the GRE....if you look around a bit you can find a complete list of those schools who will accept your MCAT score in place of the GRE.

c) your state school will be the cheapest hands down...not sure which that would be in illinois.

some general advice though is that if you are doing this just to do SOMETHING in your year off before med school then there are better options. you won't accomplish much if you end up at one of the few (and less prestegious) 1 yr programs nor will it help you get into med school because you would have already sent your AMCAS and most of your secondaries before your first semester is over.

Thanks for the advice, but I was planning on doing an mph after my first 2 years of med school so it isn't like I am doing this just to take up the year. Could you please give me the list of 1 year programs that take the MCAT that you applied to? thanks

the only 1 year program that I applied to was dartmouth and they take the MCAT....search around this board, there's probably a thread about this already. If you only look for 1 yr programs at this point you'll have VERY limited choice and won't be able to attend a quality school of public health...however if you do the MPH during or after med school you can do a 1 yr MPH at the best of the best public health schools.

Yes, Dartmouth appears to be one of the few programs out there that can be completed in 1 year and I believe they are still accepting applications (on a rolling basis) unless the class has already been filled. You should call and find out. They are especially regarded in outcomes research which is highly relevant if you want to go into medicine.

I know this might sound like a very stupid question but since I will be getting an medical degree to go along with my MPH, it is a huge advantage to go to one of the top MPH programs since this degree will probably always be second to my MD degree? I don't say this to make an MPH seem lower or any less difficult or important then an MD, but I am speaking specifically for myself. Again I hope none of you take this the wrong way.

first of all you don't actually KNOW that you're going to get an MD

second of all if you are going to spend your money on anything you should get the biggest bang for your buck and you tend to get that at one of the top univiersities which tend to offer better opporunties and access to the best faculty in the field.

it continues to sound like you just want to find some way to kill a yr with little real interest in public health. Clearly your best bet would be to go get a job.
