So, here is the thing. One of my friends has failed out of dental school. He was at NYU and didn't pull the grades the first year, and since this school is a weed-out school, he is out. Now what? Well, that's what i want to know. What do you guys suggest he should go about doing. He is completely confused. He doesnt' know if he should study again for the DATs and since i am not in this realm, I know nothing about this stuff. I don't know how applying to dental school is, so:

1) what do you recommend he should do?

2) are there masters, or post-bac programs like for med school?

3) should he take the DATs again?

4) has anyone that you guys know ever run into this problem?

5) what are the steps to getting into dental school in the first place, so maybe i can help him out more.

PLEASE answer any of these questions. That would be so much help to him.

thanks!!

So people actually involuntarily fail out of dental school??? Damn.....what does it take to get kicked out of NYU? What grades did your friend have? ANd how many people fail out of NYU every year?

well, he got terrible asthma and ended up not doing as well. and don't be mean. s*** happens, you have to learn from it and try to encourage people to make another attempt. (that's where i come into play)

Knowing his grades would be helpful in understanding his situation.

Also, I can't believe that his situation was solely related to asthma. It seems NYU was more than willing to allow students to defer until next year due to the insane amoutn of students that entered this year--why would they not do the same for your friend with a health issue at the core of the situation?

Something doesn't make sense here. Is there more to the story? Knowing more would help when it comes to advice.

I simply can't believed NYU dumped him on his arse because he had a health problem.

When was I being mean?

If it was due to an illness....IM sure the NYU admin would have been more forgiving to him and not kick him out for good......I think there is probably more to the story......

beat me to it gavin

There should be more to the story. D-1's at NYU are NOT even done with their finals yet. Heck, due to schedule confilicts, one of their finals is after the break. Plus, at NYU you are allowed to remediate 3 courses. So, it is very early for NYU to dismiss someone due to academic misconduct. If your friend wants to, he should be able to take sometime off due to illness.

ok, i should be a little more honest. First off, even though the asthma was there, it wasn't the sole reason why he blew it. He just got really bad grades for whatever reason (wanted to enjoy NY...whatever else it possibly could be). And i'm sorry for saying you guys are being mean, b/c i just want to protect him since everyone else has been making fun of him for failing out. It happens. Either way, what do you guys recommend. I really feel i don't know who else to turn to, and this web site has come in handy for myself personally. Thanks in advance, and i hope some good comes of this attempt.

and one other thing: he got kicked out at the end of last year's academic year. So, he's been out of school for a few months, depressed like crazy, and has nearly given up. That should help out a bit. Again, thanks!

Where I went to dental school, it is almost impossible to fail out. They really want to help you get through d-school, no matter how bad your grades are. NYU seems to be notorious for booting people. The saying goes that they accept more people than they can accomodate and plan on failing a number to tail down the class size.....
Just a thought, if this could somehow be proved, and your friend is a borderline case, legal action is an option. I hate to resort to litigation, but I've heard a number of these situations to be resolved through legal action. Schools do pretty much anything to avoid lawsuits, especially ones that they could potentially lose. If NYU really has intent to kick people out every year, you may have a case....just a thought because I honestly think your friend is going to have some real problems getting readmitted to d-school, having already failed out of one.

Last years class had 7 dismissed for academic misconduct. The class size was 235.

You have to try really hard to get kicked out of here. They want everyone to graduate. Like previous people have said, you can retake 3 failed classes...that is very generous.

This is how you get kicked out here. Lets say there are two people. Student "A" gets a 65, 61, 59 as his final grade in 3 classes; Student "B" gets 48, 50, 41 (and these are curved grades).

Student "A" gets to redo his classes in the summer and most likely student "B" will be dismissed.

They feel if you are failing really bad you probably can't remediate. There is no key formula to kicking people out, they look at each person individually.

Best thing, from what I have heard, is redo the whole app process again and reapply and have a damn good reason you failed out.

Its going to be one hell of a road for your friend

A significant life altering productive break in time is likley the best route for your friend to take. For example, signing up for three years in the Navy as a corpsman or Army as a combat medic and volunteering for duty in Afghanistan might be a good option.

good god,

i had no idea that you can get kicked out of school that easy after going through the living hell process of admissions.

i am sorry that this type of things has happened to people, but i know i will not even have to worry about such a thing.

why?
because i would study my ass off day and night if i have to.
personally, it really shocks me that someone who went through years of high school, college could do things like (enjoying NY) and jeopardizing his whole life.

Great point perfect3435. I am currently a second year at NYU. Last year wasn't easy by any means but it was definitely do-able. I've said this before: I have no sympathy for students who fail out of NYU. This is your career. Like Brocnizer said, NYU is VERY generous in letting people remediate. You can remediate 3 courses PER YEAR!! Yes, you can fail 3 courses, come back for the summer remedial (PAID FOR BY NYU) and go on to the next year. Not only that, each student is personally evaluated by a remedial committee. Last year especially, there were lots of exams where the average was ~70% but we were gauranteed a curve to 80%. Talk about generous. (although, this year is a different story w/ all the AP students). Last point about this: you get accepted to dental school w/ the belief that you can succeed. If you don't have the discipline and the effort to work hard then just realize that you took somebody else's seat that may have been more qualified.

To the OP, I think the obvious thing to do would be to advise your friend to apply again IF dentistry is the only thing he/she is interested in. In the meantime, he/she already knows what course we take here 1st semester...so maybe get him/her to take some courses in the spring semester (biochem, histo, cell bio, etc). Also, I'm not sure how much you know about your friend's stats, but I'm very surprised NYU didn't offer him to repeat 1st year. They usually give that option to students who fail remediation...

i didn't know they were this generous. it is frustrating for me to hear of their willingness to make an effort for their students. So, they let some students repeat their first year? Howcome when i asked my friend about this, he said this wasn't an option???

well, it depends. i don't know your friend's situation. did he fail more than 3 courses? did he fail his remedial course? I have a friend who was a year ahead of me. He failed a remedial course. NYU didn't kick him out....but they did make him repeat 2nd year.

i think he did fail out of more than three. so, i guess what i'm understanding is that if you fail out of more than three classes, then you aren't allowed to repeat again, right? otherwise, they are willing to let you repeat the year?

How about med school in the caribbean?

He can apply there and never bring up the fact that he failed out of dental school.

Now Rezdawg, lets not assume that our Caribbean medical colleagues are inferior to state side MD?s. I think it?s been proven that you get the same residencies that United States MDs and shhh even DOs do if you attend a medical school in the tropics. In fact, I know of one school that offers an MD degree (in three years) if you complete their Monday-Thursday classes.

Sorry to hear ur friend's story.
Does your friend still want to be a dentist? I know this whole experience sucks if it happens to everybody. If he really wants to be a dentist, he should apply again and try his best to stay focus and improve his grades. By all mean, I believe all dental students are very bright students, which is why you guys got accepted. If it is a health-related issue, consult a doctor and see if your friend can resolve it. I am not sure why your friend needed to re-take DAT. Not competitive or the date of test is prior to 2000? I hope your friend can get everything together before the deadlines. There are a couple schools that still accept applications.

Like other graduate school, dental school has a tough curriculum. Someone may argue that it is even tougher than med sch. reason being that we have to obtain science background in addition to multiple techniques. Dont be surprise if your workload is overwhelming. (This is y we appreciate sdners such as Gavin who are in dental school with all the crazy schedule and still spends efforts and time to give us significant insights and support. Thanks) I heard lots of experience from dentists and dental students, with amazing stats in undergrad, that they still fail multiple times in dental school or perhaps in life. Face it, we are just a human being. Luckily, we are educated and we have a bunch of resources that can help: counseling and sdn =) I hope this helps. Though, I could say that hard work does pay off. Just hang in there in the application process and hang in there for 4 plus years. It will be a wonderful life.

The toughest part of dentistry is to get into a dental school.
The next toughest part is to graduate. I heard this from someone important to me =)
I am still working on the toughest part. Best of lucks to everyone.
