EDIT:

1) I am currently trying to get into a Chemistry class, but chances are low due to class availability & add/drop ends this thurs. I also found out today that UCF's Chem I (CHM 2045C) does NOT have a lab, but instead a lecture and a discussion [Chem II does have a lab though].. I have visited many pharm schools' sites and they all require a lab component in chem I. I also stopped by the chemistry department this morning and was told that they only have a lecture and no lab.. The worst case scenario would be me trying to take chem I at a near-by college (FAU in st. Lucie) in the summer, if that is even possible (I am trying to find out right now.. anyone have any prior experience like this? share?). I really don't know what to do in this situation... If it IS possible to do it like that, will it be counted against me in admissions?

Here is the course description:
"CHM 2045C COS-CHEM 4(3,1)
Chemistry Fundamentals I: PR: A passing score
in the Chemistry Placement Exam. Not open to students
with credit in both CHM 2040C and CHM 2041C. Priority
will be given to students whose major requires this course.
Principles of modern chemistry, units and measures, basic
physical theory of chemical reactivity, stoichiometry, reactions
in aqueous solutions, thermochemistry, atomic structure,
periodicity, chemical bonding, states of matter, gases.
The "NC" grading policy applies to this course. Fall, Spring.
M&S fee: $9.00"

If I don't get into a chemistry I class this semester, should I try taking it without a lab 2nd semester or just wait until summer and take it somewhere else, if possible? I will try to contact my advisor to see what options I have, but I do not know where else to look for answers, so I really appreciate all of your help. Thank you so much, once again.

Hello.

I am a first year at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. I'm currenty considering going into the Pharmacy field after doing a lot of research (I was undecided up until 4 months ago & I'm still not sure if this is what i want to do), so for my first semester I've signed up for classes that fufill both my gen. ed. pre-reqs and some of my pre-pharm requirements as well. Here are the classes I am enrolled in as of now:

BSC 2010C Biology I w/ Lab
SPC 1608 Fund. of Oral Communication
MAC 1140 PreCalc
PHI 2010 Intro. to Philosophy
FIL 1000 Cinema Survey

And the classes I already have credits in:

POS 2041 American Government
CGS 1060C Intro. Comp Sci
STA 2023 Stat. Methods I
ENC 1101 Eng Comp I
Enc 1102 Eng Comp II
PSY 2012 Gen Psychology

I have many questions and not many people to help answer them.. I've been very stressed out and confused, leading to many mini-crying fests and I would be SO GRATEFUL if anyone could help out-- even a little.

MOST IMPORTANT #1) I am currently trying to get into a Chemistry class, but chances are low due to class availability & add/drop ends this thurs. I also found out today that UCF's Chem I (CHM 2045C) does NOT have a lab, but instead a lecture and a discussion [Chem II does have a lab though].. I have visited many pharm schools' sites and they all require a lab component in chem I. I am not sure what to do at this point... should I still sign up and take the course and somehow find a way to do a lab at another school during the summer (if that's even possible??? my local community college does not offer chemistry 1 at all)?? I really don't know what to do in this situation... If it IS possible to do it like that, will it be counted against me in admissions? HAS ANYONE EVER ENCOUNTERED SOMETHING LIKE THIS BEFORE? Should I just take the class???
I will still be behind in my chemistry courses since I can't take chem II until after chem 1... University of Florida DOES have chemistry 1 with a lab but i don't even think it's possible for me to take classes there while im in UCF.. Has anyone ever had this problem before? I tried googling the chemistry without the lab problem for pre-pharm students but to no avail.. and my advisors are not much help as UCF has no pharmacy school.. 🙁

#2) What general electives do I need to fufill my pre-pharm courses? I have done research, but the classes differ from school to school, so I tried choosing the courses that are mostly required for a majority of pharm schools (ex. Speech). If I already have psychology credits is it recommended that I still take philosophy? I chose not to take economics this semester as I already have a US Govt to fufill my gen ed & if I decide to continue with pharm, I will take it next semester or during the summer. What other options are recommended? Am I on track? I want to drop Precalc and take a placement test to place into Calculus I next semester. I also would not need Film, because if I take Philosophy, that area of my gen ed reqs would be fufilled.

#3) Do most school require a history course? It it recommended that I take one? If I do drop Precalc & Film, i will need a 4th class... And I am not sure what to take.

#4) What courses are considered Humanities courses? Social & Behaviorial Courses? Which one does Psych & Philosophy fall under?

#5) I realize that since I am only taking a biology class this semester as my only science (if I don't get into Chem), I will be very behind on my pharm pre-reqs... It is suggested that I take science/math/gen. ed (econ, hum, etc) courses in the summer to catch up or is that a no-no? If I decide to continue with pharmacy, will I really need 3 years to finish up my pre reqs?

#6) Should I try to get a internship at a pharmacy this summer or stay in school and complete more pre-req courses? Because my housing contract requires me to pay for the summer so I might as well take classes, but at the same time, interning would allow me to get more involved and to get a feel for the field, and perhaps help me decide...

#7) I am mostly undecided but I am interested in Pharmacy because it seems like a stable, high paying career and my parents are pushing me towards it. Right now, I am not sure if it is for me as I don't have any particular love for the sciences, but I am pursuing it because nothing else interests me (and everything else that does can't make much money/won't make me happy eg. art/english/psych). If I hadn't chosen Pharm, I would most likely be doing business for the same exact reasons. I realize that this is a issue that can't really be resolved by anyone other than myself... but I was wondering how some of you decided on Pharmacy and if you were ever in a similar position.. And if you're content/happy with your career and your choices now. One of my biggest fears is continuing with the program and then realizing that I hate it but it would be too late to change back.. I don't want to regret anything and right now I'm so stressed and scared and worried that I don't know what to do anymore other than wait. And just sitting and waiting won't help any...

I apologize for the length (for anyone who read the whole thing, thank you).

Please, any input at all would help me tremendously. I greatly appreciate any and all replies from the bottom of my heart. 🙂

#1) Are you sure your looking at the right Chem course? I would think it would be a 1000 level course for one and I've never heard of a Gen Chem course without a lab

1) A general chem class should have a lab. It is possible you are looking at the wrong class; maybe a chem for non-majors perhaps.
2)You fulfill the pre-reqs of the schoosl you wish to apply. Enough said, there's no way to get around that.
3) Check the requirement of the schools you wish to apply to.
4) Psych is a social science. Philosophy is a humanity.
Social sciene= sociology & Psychology
Humanity= History & philosophy
I don't know what anthro is.
5) It takes however long it takes. Many people go on and finish there BA/BS.
6) Interning is what you do when you are in pharmacy school.
You may shadow or work in a pharmacy now. It is highly suggest you do this so that you can gain experience and see if pharmacy is for you.
7) Shadow a pharmacist to see if this is what you want. Also do research on the career. It is not what it used to be.

Thank you so much for answering.

I checked the course sign ups and CHM 2045 (Chem I) is only offered with a lecture and a discussion. Are you sure you shouldn't be taking CHM 1032 (3 cr lecture) and CHM 1032L (1 cr lab)?

Okay this is what I was able to find. I'm sure all of this you already know.

Florida, like most states, have a standard way of numbering all higher education courses in their state.

This is how they explain how to tell if a course is equivilent.
If the prefix (first three letters) and the last three digits of the course number are the same, then the course is considered equivalent.
http://www.admissions.ufl.edu/ugrad/trtransfercredit.html

Using this I took your schools list of course discriptions.
http://www.catalog.sdes.ucf.edu/courses_and_descriptions/UCF_Courses_and_Descriptions.pdf
I then compared it to UF list of Chem course descriptions here.
http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/catalog/programs/courses/chem.html

So using this, UF Gen chem 1 is listed as:
CHM 2045 for the lecture.
CHM 2045L for the lab.

Your class is labeled.
CHM 2045 C.

So it is a the same level of class. the UF classes are 3 credits fo rlecture 1 for lab which equals 4. Your class is 4 credits total. So I'm wondering if your class is comprehensive and just has the whole shabang under one title.

What I suggest is for you to talk to your Chem department again and see if
CHM 2045C= CHM 2045 + CHM 2045L

@pinksparkly: I am not 100% sure, but UF's school of Pharmacy requires courses ending in CHM #045 and CHM #45L, so I don't think those are the course I need. (http://www.cop.ufl.edu/studaff/admission.pdf) Thank you, though!!

@UNMorBUST: Thank you so much for all the time you invested in my situation!!! I am so grateful; you have been very kind.

I see that as well, however I've just called again and was told that there is definitely no lab in 2045 C, just a lecture and a discussion. However, the advisor who picked up the phone said that some schools usually accept the discussion component as a lab, and that many students in similar fields have taken the same class and moved forward without a problem. However, I wanted to double-check if UF would accept the discussion as a lab, but when I called them, the lady at the desk said that the pharm department/advisors won't be speaking to prospective/transfer students until mid-september due to the backlog... She also said that she is not 100% sure, but if the online pre-reqs (http://www.cop.ufl.edu/studaff/admission.pdf) ask for a lab, then the discussion most likely will not satisfy the requirement...

As for the 2045C vs. the 2045L issue, the Chemistry II class offered here at UCF DOES have a lab, and is labeled as such:

"CHM 2046 COS-CHEM 3(3,0)
Chemistry Fundamentals II: PR: “C” grade or better
in CHM 2045C or CHM 2041C. Priority will be given to
students whose major requires this course. Continuation of
CHM 2045C or the CHM 2040C & CHM 2041C sequence.
Intermolecular forces, solutions and colligative properties.
Equilibria, thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, electrochemistry,
nuclear chemistry.

CHM 2046L COS-CHEM 1(0,3)
Chemistry Fundamentals Laboratory: CR: CHM
2046. Priority will be given to students whose major
requires this course. Illustration of chemical principles and
introduction to the techniques of inorganic and physical
chemistry. IMPORTANT: Attendance of the first laboratory
session dealing with safety procedures is mandatory;
students who do not attend must immediately call the
Chemistry Department, and may be dropped from the class."

So I don't think that's the case... 🙁

It seems that I'm reaching roadblocks in every direction i turn..

Contact the individual schools. Make sure you explicitly state that this is the chemistry course that chemistry majors take at your school.

If you look at there course listings , it is their equivalent of Gen Chem 1. Why it does not contain a lab is beyond me.
There sequence is weird. It is Chem fundamentals 1, Chem Fund 2, then some semblance of normality when the next class is called organic chem 1 which has a pre-req of Chem fund 2.

xletoile, looks like your going to have to contact the UF people when they are taking questions. I'm sure you are not the first to come across this problem, and they will be able to give you a straight answer rather then our speculations. The worst that could happen would have you taking Gen chem 1 at a local CC. However, I don't think it will come to that. Good luck.

Okay, I will try doing exactly that. Thank you all once again, especially you, UNMorBUST, for all your help!! I hope it will not come to that as well, but the future looks dark for now...

Thank you all so much!!!

Just a note, my chemistry classes did not come with a lab at my university. They offered a separate lab class that was 4 credits. This was for ALL science classes, including bio, o chem and physics. So we had to take gen chem I, gen chem II and chem lab I, which fulfilled the chemistry prereqs for pharm school. Maybe there's a school near you who offers just the lab class too?

Oh, YES! I believe FAU or a CC near me may offer a lab separate from their chemistry course!! But is it difficult to first take the lecture & discussion and do the lab separately/after the lecture ends? Or should I just take the lecture & lab together in another school during the summer? I'm still in the middle of trying to figure out whether it's possible for me to take the class in a different school during the summer and how to go about doing that.. But thankfully, I do not need any concrete answers until at least around the end of this semester.

My courses are now:

EUH 2000 Western Civ. I
BSC 2010C Biology I w/ Lab
SPC 1608 Fund. of Oral Communication
PHI 2010 Intro. to Philosophy

Since I cannot take any chem or calc class until next semester, I am just focusing on taking courses for both my gen ed and pharm. The downside to this is that I don't get immersed into the sciences right away, so I may not be able to figure out if this is what I want to do until after this year (or the summer) ends... Hmm..

Thank you for replying though!! 🙂

You've probably finished post grad by now, what did you end up doing? I start freshman year at UCF in a month and Chem Fund 1 still has no lab.
