Honestly as I write this out I’m pretty sure my chances are close to 0 on ever getting into dental school but maybe someone else thinks otherwise.
I’m a senior graduating in May for reference.
cGPA: 2.93
sGPA: 2.37 (I think? I can’t tell if some of my courses count as science courses or not but counting the one’s that for sure are this is what it is)
I haven’t taken DAT yet planning on taking it this summer depending on whether or not I feel I might even have a chance at dental school.
My big hits to my GPA were getting a C- in intro Chem and Calculus my freshman year (a 5 credit class) and failing Organic last year (got a D+ but retook and earned a B+).
Extracurriculars:
I’m an African-American woman coming from a single parent household and an economically disadvantaged family. My mother passed away from breast cancer when I was 8 and I have struggled with depression and anxiety ever since, I only began to seek help with my mental illness this past summer and am now on antidepressants and being screened for ADD. My father has struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction since my mothers passing as well which has also contributed my mental health problems and financial problems (having to work more to pay for school etc.)
My mentor/research PI is on the admissions board for the Dental school in my area (a state-school if that matters) and says that I have a good chance for getting in some places depending on how my DAT scores turn out. But other advisors such as the advisor in the diversity office at that school or the general pre-health advisor at my university say that I should look more into post-bacc and masters programs but still apply just in case. I’ve been looking at other post-bacc programs (Ohio State University’s DentPath Program is looking like the most attainable option right now, I also have a good connection there), but I’m just not sure of anything at this point.
Is it even worth it to apply to any masters or post-bacc program? Or even straight to dental school for that matter? Or should I just plan a career in another field instead?

Extracurriculars:
- Undergraduate research at a dental school every summer for the past 5 years. 8-week programs with around 30 hours per week.
- Held 2 positions in my sorority as a delegate and on our standards board.
- Was on my residence halls diversity and inclusion board sophomore year.
- Volunteered as a camp counselor for 2 summers at a camp for children who’s parents have or had cancer.
- I worked in a university cafeteria my sophomore and junior year averaging 12 hours per week during the school year.
- Still shadowing currently and on track to have at least 100 hours by application time.
