How would you guys compare the following (in no particular order!) ?
Beth Israel
Pitt
U of Chicago
Michigan
Washington U St. Louis
Columbia
Cornell
NYU
Yale
Dartmouth
Emory
Penn State
Georgetown
Maryland
UWash (seattle)

I feel like this is where I stand:

TOP PICK: BID, Pitt, Michigan, Wash U, UChicago, Cornell, Columbia, Emory
bottom pick: Uwash, Yale, Dartmouth, Penn State, Georgetown, Maryland, NYU

but I can't put any order to my top pick schools!

I love boston, pittsburgh, chicago, and new york.
--but new york is too expensive, is the cost there really worth the training I would get in NYC? Or can I get comparable training at the other program while living within my means somehwhere else?
--WashU was a great program but I don't think I want to move to St. Louis, as far as my future is concerned is it worth going their just for the reputation of the program and its training despite being away from family?
--I really loved BID but am afraid that it is not as reputable at MGH or the Brigham, is this something that I am making an issue in my head? I just want to get a fellowship somewhere in the future and i don't want to be excluded from fellowship spots because I didn't go to MGH or the Brigham.
--I love Chicago the city, but the dinner made me feel like I didn't really fit in.
--PITT, amazinggg but i rather live in boston
--Michigan--also amazinggg---but Ann Arbor is not a tempting place to move to.

I have no idea how to decide this! I wish I didn't have so many choices. I know ultimately it is up to me, but if any of you can provide some input about any of these programs or give me some advice to help me think clearly, that would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks everyone.🙂

Looks like a great list top to bottom, and I'm sure many people would love to have your "dilemma." From what you said, it seems like UPMC and BID should be your top 2. Can't go wrong with either, but I've heard so many good things about UPMC. Gut feeling at that point and which group of people you think you'd get along better with and be the happiest. You will be able to get great fellowships from either one. After those two, I'd base it on your location preference....Columbia, Cornell, Chicago, Michigan, Wash U, Emory

I'm at the med school here at Pitt, and I think it'd be a solid place for residency. I've spent a pretty large amount of time with residents and faculty and been totally impressed. Pitt will give you great training and is a really supportive place from everyone I've talked to. They're not gonna bend you over for 4 years and extract as much as they can. Good training and fellowship placement if you have interest.

It sounds like BID, Pitt, and UChicago might be the ones you would be leaning towards and the others have locations that are a big factor.

Just a heads up. The COL in Boston is not as bad as NYC but still comes pretty close in comparison to the other east coast cities. However, I don't think the residents at BID have any problems whatsoever with fellowship.

If you're dinner experience is the major thing holding you back from ranking the UofC in your top, then it might be worth a second look. I had a really great experience with the pre-interview dinner. It is all kind of luck of the draw at whose table you sit.

Pitt was probably one of my dark horse programs that I went in not really with high expectations, but left completely amazed. I've spent time in the city and I think it's awesome. It's definitely on the up (and UPMC has a big role in that) and has a pretty young population because of Pitt and CMU. It's obviously not on the same level as NYC or Boston, but still has a lot to do. IMHO I would say it's on it's way to more of a Philly feel.

Every single resident at BID last year matched at their number 1 fellowship. Talk to the residents about it (or watch the video on their website). Don't think getting a fellowship from BID would be an issue at all. And I loved their program, too...just not willing to pay for the COL in Boston.
