I've been first assisting in total joint and ortho trauma surgeries being employed by the hospital as a surgical assistant for several years now. Although very skilled in the OR, I have no experience with writing orders or providing any pre-op or post-op care (next day rounds, discharges etc) - that was not my scope of practice. Times got changed though: our hospital was bought by another one, and they are now firing all surgical assistants, and hiring PA's instead.
A group of surgeons I've been working for still want to keep me if I would also be able to perform "PA's duties in addition to my regular OR work" Legally, they can go around it if I write orders and the surgeons only sign them. I am not expected to see patients in the office. My job will be hospital based.
The surgeons said they would train me, but they won't. They are busy, I can rely on myself. They'll check, yes, but won't teach.
Please help: direct me to the best *practical* resources to learn everything necessary to basically provide services comparable to those of surgical ortho PA (short of clinic though) My need is actually narrow and specific: to be comfortable with orders/rounds on TKA, THA, ACL repair, revision hips/knees, and various trauma surgeries (like rodding of the femur, ORIF of radial fx, etc) What pocket book would you suggest to me, please? What resources/online videos/"orders for dummies" can I use to learn about this quickly? Thank you.
