I recently graduated from UC Irvine with an engineering degree but want to now go to Medical School. I emailed UC Davis medical school about whether or not I could finish the Bio and OChem courses I still need to take at a Junior College. The person responded with this.

Y"es, it's true. Some medical schools including UC DO NOT recognize community college coursework for those individuals having already earned a 4-year degree. Clinical work, community service, etc. will not overshadow the fact that you completed the premedical courses at a community college. Most successful medical school applicants have taken UPPER-DIVISION genetics and biochemistry. Community college courses WILL NOT fulfill our 1/2 year upper-division cell biology, biochemistry, genetics or molecular biology requirement."

What do I do? Am I forced to take all the prerequisites at a UC or state school? Do Medical Schools NOT accept a person who has a UC degree but rather take finish the prerequisites to save money?

I called UCSF about the same exact thing today, i got a call back stating that it was ok to take pre reqs at Comm College because I HAD a Bachelor's Degree. Call a couple of schools and double check.

You dont have to take ALL courses through four year schools; you can take general bio, chem, and physics at comm college (although the competition is weak and you need to force yourself to work really hard to master all the material). Genetics, Ochem lab, molecular bio, etc., will probably have to be taken at universities. I reccommend keeping your day job and taking pre-reqs at night school if you have the opportunity.
