i don't want to come across as one of those guys with a 260 asking if he'll get into peds, or the 225 guy asking if he will get into EM.

i think my score is a legit borderline score when it comes to certain things. i never wanted to read x-rays so nothing to worry there. im a bit sad about having the door close on me so early with surgical subs, i think i may have liked them. that said my heart was always on IM or peds when i entered me school and was wondering from those with a bit more experience than me, do i have a chance of matching and if so what type of programs am i looking at?

i'm at a top 25 med school (if that matters), first 2 years are P/F but that said I wasn't really doing that great but I never failed anything, just kept getting a P like everyone else that didn't get AOA.

Would someone shed some light into the types of programs I could maybe have a shot at? Perhaps academic centers like UMD, GW, Miami? Would UNC, or even UVA be a bit out of my league at this point? TIA

well, this year a 99 was a 229 at the lowest point. In years past it was like a 237. so take that for what its worth. made me feel better with my score in the 220's

I think a score in the 220's is a different story. When you go < 220 that's usually below the national average for all test-takers as well as the national average for IM match.

I understand that Step 1 is one of a handful of things looked at but I'm also aware of the amount of weight it does carry (hence our concerns w/ the score).

I think in my mind I have a range worked out where people with 230+ are going to be considering top 10 programs for IM (MGH, JHU, Duke etc.), 220s is average and slight above-average and have there hat thrown in for a whole wide range of programs..

What happens to the 210-219 crowd is my general concern? Are these the psyc and pmr guys or are those the < 200 guys that get pidgeon-holed there? I guess I just wanted to know if I can still go into an internal med program at an average unversity program that would allow me to eventually go into hem/onc. tia

According to charting outcomes in the match 2009...people with around your score still had >90% probability of matching in IM. WHERE is another issue...but that's being realistic. Despite feeling like it might be the end of the world, you can rest assured that you can still kick butt on wards and knock step 2 out of the park. Your score probably won't get you filtered out of many but the most elite programs...so relax, work hard, and learn about them patients!

Please look at page 101 here:
http://www.nrmp.org/data/chartingoutcomes2009v3.pdf

99% of IM applicants with a Step 1 score between 211 and 220 matched, as did 96% of those with scores between 201 and 210.

Thanks for the responses. That was basically the information I was unaware of and needed to look at to understand the overall distribution of scores. Ideally there would be something that told the distribution for academic programs, but that's reaching. Anyhow I think it gives me a better understanding of where I am at and more importantly what I need to do to get to where I want to be.

I think I'm going to take tonight off though to try and be happy w/ the fact i passed and that I'm still breathing. again, thx
