hello people, how are you? ok this is my situation. i graduated from college with a 3.6. volunteered, research, everything the whole nine yards. i took the mcat and got a 3-5-6...english is my 3rd language.

its too late to take the mcat again, and im not gonna apply with those scores. so that means i'll retake them april 2002. which means if i get in, i'll start fall 2003. however, what do i do in the meantime? i was thinking of getting a master's degree in basic medical science's.

what do u guys think?
😕 😕 😕

Man don't do master, I don't think it will helpe at all. Go get part time or full time job and make some $$$ at the same time study for the MCAT. good luck 😉

If your undergrad degree is in the "sciences", I suggest doing a master's in "English". I am totally serious. You must be able to fluently read and communicate in English to prosper in US Medical Schools.

If you are hoping to go DO...having a liberal arts degree is to your advantage. It shows your sincerity and intention to stay here and practice medicine.

I'm in the first three weeks of Medical school right now and it is all about reading fast and recalling information. You DO NOT have time to learn new concepts or to struggle with terminology.

Your scores suggest you are not clear on several concepts. You must work very hard to improve your knowledge base if you want to attend Med school. The verbal part is all about reading very fast. Having a second degree in English will help you wade through the literature terminology and fluff. I have no doubt that many of the works you were tested on will be included in a Master's curriculum.

While doing the master's, you should volunteer in a hospital. Direct experience always helps. Good luck to you. 🙂

First off, Motley Crue rocks! 😀

Second, you need to retake the MCAT. I agree with the above posts that you should pursue additional coursework in English. I would consider enrolling in English courses at your local university if a Master's is too much of a pull. That way you could prepare for your MCAT retake while honing your English skills.

Good luck!

I agree with the other posts re remediation for your English skills. I certainly admire the fact that you can speak two other languages, but if you want to go to school in this country you must become much more proficient in the verbal skills. But a combined science score of 11 is not good either. Part of this score may be attributed to your admittedly poor English skills. But this tip might help. In addition to doing some serious work in English (and this could be done by tutoring, not necessarily formal classwork), consider taking some graduate level classes in a hard science. Don't sign up as a degree seeking student. But if you can take and ace grad level hard science classes, you can make a powerful arguement about having the ability to do well in medical school science classes despite your scores. Good luck! It takes alot of guts to admit that you have a problem and seek help. I admire your courage.
