Hi guys, I am an international medical grauduate. I did an elective in internal medicine at a prestigious program in the US, the elective went pretty good, and before the end of elective I asked the attending for a letter, he asked me to send him my CV, I did that and the next day he said k I am too busy right now, just keep in touch with me and I will send you the letter back home, you need not to worry about it.

After coming back home, i have sent him emails a number of times, he replied the very first time that i will be free next week but did not get any replies from him since then. I am really really worried about this whole issue. I spend a lot of money on that whole trip. Many of my friends have received letters back home after doing electives in the same way!!🙁

What should I do? Should I try meeting him the next time I go for the CS? Even then how would he be able to write about my clinical skills that he observed after about 2 years??

Would appreciate your comments! thanks

I would recommend contacting the faculty member's secretary. If you are nice to him/her, you might find they can push your letter to the top of the faculty's stack of things to do.

I take it that you took this elective about a year ago? Some attendings won't write letters that far back as they can't remember the person. I would show up in person as it is easier to remember a face (and harder to ignore a physical presence than some email from the ether).

Go take the C.S. and stop by the hospital for a day after, i.e. go to a lecture, say hello to the whole group and physically present documentation for a letter in person, saves the writer time as they can physically see you and can link the request to a name.

I would agree with Winged as any help on the inside, i.e. a secretary, could help you out. If this is for ERAS there is special paperwork to be sent, and I would include an updated C.V., and perhaps a little blurb about why you are interested in medicine and how the elective you did there helped. Again, easier to ignore an email from the ether than a physical letter.
