I am currently a high school student (senior) and I am interested in becoming an Optometrist. I actually can’t afford to go straight into a UC so I have decided to go to a local community college that offers a guaranteed spot into a UC if the GPA and the grades are good.

I would like your advice on which classes I should take during my first two years of college that will help me out with Optometry course, later on. (Also, I would like to major in Social psychology at UC Irvine; is that a good idea?) :scared:

my advice would be to take not take the prerequisites for optometry school at community college and rather take other required electives that will help you complete your degree once you do go to UC (art, history, enlgish or another class required by your schools curriculum that is not science).
i say this because optometry schools (and dental school/med school/grad schools in general) would mostly rather you not complete your science req. at community colleges. granted each school has their own take on courses taken at cc but most would rather you complete your science reqs at a 4 year institution.
You can major in anything you want as long as you complete the prereq courses stated by the optometry school you are interested in on their website. hope this helps 😀

UCI is a good place to be as it is major optometry "feeder" school. I would recommend you actually tap into their optometry club there.

Also, I just want to chime in briefly on CC. I'm a big fan of it. I took every single pre-req I needed at CC and got a 400 TS OAT score (370AA). So...I do recommend taking them at CC not only because the smaller class size MIGHT offer you a better learning environment than the 300+ gen ed classes at UC (I myself am a UCSD grad in psyc).

Though I don't think I'm being entirely helpful on class advice (as I don't think it matters as much as people think), I do want to recommend that you spend time shadowing a handful of different optometrists, and then shadow some more as that SHOULD be the #1 reason you are interested in the field, finding the daily grind fascinating. ^_^ ah highschool...i can't help but feel old

So, far, this gave an insight. Thank you for that. But have you continued your education and went to an Optometry school?
