Please help me rank these FM programs by reputation

I just ranked by general vibes and location, I know none of these are particularly strong, but any information you have regarding these programs would be super helpful, thanks!

I am not aware that anyone really cares about the reputation of FM programs unless said reputation is terrible.

The exception to that is if you want more expanded scope than is the usual (c-sections, for example) and then its just a matter of finding a program that offers training in that.

There's no way for us to do this unless we too are actively interviewing and spending the time, effort getting to know these programs.

But once you're 2-3yrs out from residency, this stuff is pretty disconnected from the life of attendings. You're better off asking classmates who graduated the year above you or going on reddit.

That said, LSU Shreveport is consistently on reddit's Name and Shame threads every Match Season. HCMC, though one of the best ER training knife and gun shows in the nation, was known to absolutely awful place for FM to train when I interviewed there.

Could you please share why Hennepin was awful? I thought Hennepin had a solid rep in Minnesota

For medical specialties and IM HCMC is solid to my knowledge.

I had classmates from my med school rotating there for FM during interview season, however. They told us straight up DNR... though this was years ago. More recently, the hospital/organization is struggling and may be restructured due to being one of the main safety net hospitals in the state.

Eons ago, I interviewed at half these places. I would agree generally with your ranking, but in all reality you should be ranking on vibes and location more than almost anything else. It's probably too late, but I might move Geisinger and even Guthrie up higher, but not much.

I would absolutely move Hennepin down if they are struggling financially as a hospital, as residencies tend to illogically be some of the first things failing hospitals shut down. I also wouldn't want to spend 3 yrs in Waterloo, IA unless you're interested in addiction medicine exposure, but in general midwest FM does more.

Guthrie's location in Sayre in the middle of nowhere put me off. Geisinger is at 6 now, Hennepin third last.

I am still confused about my top 5 though.

From a reputation standpoint, most of these are comparable community FM programs. A few are a bit more well known academically, but none will dramatically change your career. Fit and location matter way more here.

Very hard to gauge fit by virtual interviews

For what it’s worth, Doximity has residency listings that allows you to sort by “reputation”. I may be wrong, but I believe they survey PDs around the country and base their rankings off their responses. I don’t think you should put too much weight into the rankings, but it’s another thing to look at if you’re curious.

I’m an oms4 applying FM and fit/location were far bigger factors for me.

I realize this is too late for your to alter your list, but for future students reading this, dear god do not put any thought whatsoever into hospital reviews. There is nothing more divorced from clinical care and educational experience than online patient reviews.
