HOLA SDN'ers!

Alright so here's the 411.....I work for the Undergrad/Pre-Vet & Diversity Programs office here at Mich. State (I'm a senior).
One of my 'duties'....for lack of a better word, is contributing to our Monthly Student Newsletter "Vetwords".

This month...in addition to an article I'm trying to do a fun little feature for the next few months. It's a little guessing game of sorts that lists TOTALLY RANDOM facts about various vet schools and people can guess or just look at the answers on another pg.

SO PLEASE if you've got a good Tid-Bit about your school......OR ANY Vet School.....POST IT!
I would very much appreciate it! And if it's used in the Newsletter I'll definitely get you a copy just for kicks.

Gracias, and Best Wishes to all those awaiting decisions this cycle, and Good Luck to all future applicants!

Now on to the RANDOM! 😀😀

There's a chandelier in the commons area of our main classroom building that was designed by artist Dale Chihuly.

James Herriot, writer of All Creatures Great and Small graduated from University of Glasgow School of Veterinary medicine in 1939.

Massey Vet School keeps a flock of rams with scrotal abnormalities for its students to practice breeding soundness exams on.

One of our anatomy professors, Peter Dodson, is a paleontologist and has named the dinosaurs Avaceratops and Suuwassea. Some students of his discovered a frog species and named it after him Nezperkius dodsoni lol

Anatomy is only 3/4 of the school year and we just finished, so he will soon be off traveling digging up more fossils haha

Oh, he is also very proud that he has an huge os penis bone from a walrus given to him from a friend

After Dr. Mealey at WSU discovered the MRD1 gene and its association with Ivermectin toxicity in collies the USA network made a House episode about it!

Part of the "Dukes of Hazzard" movie with Johnny Knoxville/Seann William Scott/Jessica Simpson was shot at the LSU vet school.

The scene where they take the core sample to get tested and are talking to the geology student - that's actually our Histology lab.

LOL yea it was pretty cool, he brought it around to us in lab one day showing it off haha

Here is a pic of one (1.4 meters long 😱 )

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baculum

There was also a skit that one of the vet classes did, i don't have time to find it right now but i'll just explain it. One professor takes out an os penis and is really proud of it (about 4 inches long) then another one says I have the better os penis!! shows one a little bigger. And then Dr. Dodson is like, i have the biggest os penis of them all!! *whips out huge as$ walrus one* lol

LOL! That is quite awesome.

That is awesome! I am such a dinosaur fan, I find them fascinating.

Nyanko: That chandelier both creeps me out and fascinates me. Does anyone else think it looks vaguely like the Flying Spaghetti Monster?

Then you would have LOVED our bird lecture lol he taught it and it was basically a bird, reptile, dinosaur lecture lol we even had a dinosaur question on our exam. In past exams he put photos of fossils and u had to identify it as more bird like or more dinosaur like lol Students were joking that out of all the species we needed to know why are we responsible for ALSO dinosaurs hahaha but he is a great professor and extremely interesting. i learned some awesome things about the history of birds

That statue is AWESOME!! and flying spaghetti monster rocks. i love when it comes up on SDN threads lol

Yeah I was none too pleased about that section of the exam. This is anatomy not comparative paleontology.

Dr. John Madigan of UC Davis developed (with a couple colleagues whose names I don't remember) the Anderson Sling, which is widely used for the support of horses who are unable to stand due to neurologic disease or severe weakness, as well as for lifting horses in rescue situations.

Gail Holmes Equine Orthopedic Research Center research in equine joint disease is supported by the NFL in the hope that research on joint problems in horses will someday help human athletes’ joint injuries

Dr. Fettman’s, a pathologist from CSU completed two-year-tour-of-duty with NASA and flew on the Space Shuttle Columbia STS-58 mission in October 1993-first Vet in space!

Dr. McNamara from WesternU discovered West Nile while she was working for the Bronx Zoo 🙂 And apparently fought with the CDC about it too. I wish I could tell her story the way she told us during our Vet Issues class 🙁.

At VMRCVM we have an 18 year old newt who is the last survivor of 125 that went up in space in the early '90's. He's called the astro-newt. Two friends and I only randomly found this out while roaming the halls in between our anatomy lab and lecture exams. We got to meet him too!

My school (not a vet school) has a double helix sculpture that was designed by Dale Chihuly. http://www.iupui.edu/spirit/campus/chihuly.html
I have yet to see it in person, though I have seen some of his other works up close and personal. Keep in mind, though, that the man just makes a drawing, and his apprentices actually blow the glass and assemble it 🙂 I still respect his work, but I think artistic credit should be given to the skilled artisans where it is due!

Auburn apparently names their dairy herd cows after people they want to honor:

MissGena.jpg

"Head Coach Gene Chizik was the special guest at today’s CPC presentation. Angelica Reyes, Class of 2011, prepared a special PowerPoint highlighting CVM’s learning opportunities and introducing the latest female additions to Auburn’s dairy herd. “It is an honor to have a cow named after you,” said Reyes. Based on Auburn’s championship football team, the CVM now has a new roster of names. Coach Chizik is shown with cow #106 also known as “Miss Gena” in his honor. “There is no place like Auburn,” said Coach Chizik. “The passion, the tradition, and the pride. And the reason is because of you – the students, the fans, the family. And,” he added, ”that’s without you naming a cow after me!” "

War Eagle!

Unfortunately, I have no awesome tidbits about the vet school I'm actually attending, haha

Peter Ostrum - better known as Charlie from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" - is a 1984 graduate of Cornell's CVM. He's in practice somewhere not far from here and sends lots of referrals our way.

I read an article about him in one of those DVM magazines a few years ago. Isn't he a dairy vet?

Report from quantized: The Chihuly sculpture nyanko posted is SO special that something chose it as its final resting place, and it is now raining maggots in Valley Hall.

His farm is like 20 minutes from my house 😀

This probably isn't news to anyone, but Texas A&M CVM (along with collaborative efforts with other A&M researchers) was the first academic institution to produce clones of a cat, dog, pig, goat, cow, horse, and (my personal favorite) a white-tailed deer. He's named Dewey after Dr. Duane Kraemer, the man who was the first to show successful embryo transfer in several animal species.

And here's Dewey. He's as big of a brat as you think he is, having been coddled since birth. He's currently part of a genetic research project and is worth more than I will probably make in my entire life! 😱
