I am doing a prelim year for my PGY 1 year and moving half way across the country to another city for my PGY 2 year.

I just received both of my contracts...

My PGY 1 year program wants me to sign a contract for 6/22/05-6/30/06.
My PGY 2 year program wants me to sign a contract to start on 7/1/06

Do you think I will be given ample opportunity to move? I don't want to contact my PGY 1 program and argue technicalities (I thought they could only contract me for 1 yr and not longer) as I don't believe that would make the best first impression. Any thoughts? Is this standard?

From what I understand, most if not all prelim programs take this into consideration, and they allow most everyone to take electives or vacation towards the end of the year.

The contract is actually a good thing because you get a guaranteed paycheck until right before you leave. 🙂

Everyone I know is taking the last week of June off to move. None of the prelims are scheduled for wards in June. The categorical interns take over the wards the last couple of weeks or so, and the upper levels handle all the cross cover. My advice would be to take all your vacation and take terminal leave without pay. Who wants to take a week of vacation to move, anyway?

terminal leave without pay...

I'm not sure that would go over too well with my former boss. Plus, they'd probably call my future program and tell them my smooth professional move.

Any other thoughts?

thoughts? relax. they doubtless have experienced this situation many times before with prelim residents. sign the contracts and send them in. there's nothing to worry about.

Nyet problema!
