SDN has been so crucial in my process to applying to medical school/mcat studying that I now humbly ask for people's advice and two cents about my situation.

I've been accepted to ATSU-SOMA and have a pending acceptance from ATSU-KCOM. I graduated in 2010 and have been working for the past two years. I am so great to be in this situation and I AM HAPPY TO BE ME, but I am just so torn right now.

I understand that some may think that one year is not a big deal, but being out of school and working at a job that I know isn't my career has made me restless.

If any current students can chime in and give me their honest opinions I would be so grateful. Thank you!

I'm not understanding the problem?

I think the "pending acceptance" is for next year's matriculating class (2017) and not this year's (2016)? Is that what you meant OP? If so, and you are already restless, I would just go to SOMA. If you really really really liked KCOM, then you could travel for a year, or do something you have always wanted to do but never had time, or just rest. I was all sorts of restless to start med school, but after a year of being here, I am super glad that I took my time getting to where I am. Becoming a physician is a marathon, not a sprint, and I don't think I will ever regret taking some time off before I matriculated. However, there is also a lost year of physician's salary to consider, not to mention the looming over-saturation of med students as compared to residency slots (there are 3 new DO schools opening this year, and I fear it is only going to get worse). Only you can make this decision....I just gave you some things to think about 🙂

haha sorry for not being clear. Total180 hit the target with what i was trying to get at. I am still young (25), single and feel that my life has been on pause waiting to get into medical school. I definitely want to make a decision that I don't want to regret.

There isn't necessarily a problem, I just wanted to get people's opinion on how they weighed their opinions on schools, specifiically kcom vs. soma.

Thanks Total180, you definitely gave me some things to think about.

Cirriculum's are different as well as location urban vs. rural. Depends on how you felt with each one... if you feel like your life has on pause then I would go with SOMA.

Come to SOMA, we're awesome. No, seriously.... 😀

At the end of the day, you need to go with your gut. There isn't a lick of difference between the two with respect to impact on your future career or anything like that. But SOMA has a unique curriculum and mission which should affect your decision.

We're here to be trained as community minded doctors. Well all schools say that's their goal, but our school really practices it; what other program has it's professors prefacing each lecture with statistics about underserved communities, and how their lecture directly relates to health issues prevalent in those communities?

Our curriculum is a lot different than any other school out there, if you don't know if you would enjoy it I might recommend going elsewhere. It's super efficient, but it's different than you've ever been taught before so keep that in mind. It's not for everyone, but for those who can thrive in it, I'm not sure you'll find a stronger focus on real-world application in the pre-clinical curriculum anywhere.

Both schools are going to move you around a bit for clinicals, difference is that with SOMA you move at the end of your 1st year to your clinical site, and KCOM you move at the end of 2nd year.

SOMA gives you real, mandatory patient contact (pre-rotations is how I like to think about it) 2nd year. We're actually graded in our physical diagnosis course based on how many physical examinations we undertake during 2nd year. We've been taught the complete physical exam during 1st year, and we're ready to go so that's not a worry at all. I'm not sure how it works at KCOM since you are just beginning clinical sciences 2nd year (I think?).

I'm obviously biased, I couldn't imagine myself being much happier with my choice to attend SOMA; but I can also acknowledge that both schools are excellent. With that said, come to SOMA, you wont regret it! 😀

PM me if you have any questions about SOMA. I'm a current 1st year.

I'm curious how you have an acceptance for the class of 2017 when the cycle hasn't opened yet.

I thought the problem was that you got an acceptance, but would rather go elsewhere and weren't sure if it was worth it to go somewhere you wouldn't be happy.
