Thanks in advance for your help.

I am interested in joining the military(or Navy or Air Force) and applying for the HPSP scholarship, but i am clueless as to how to go about this....from reading on this board, i know i have to first contact an army recruiter. I will be starting dental school (1st year) today (8/20/2012) and have already taken out a loan for my first year. So i am ideally hoping to get a 3 year scholarship if i am able to figure out how to go about it. But i am clueless as to the next steps after i contact a recruiter and would very much appreciate your help with the following:

1. Is this the right time to contact the recruiter with the hope of getting a scholarship for next year (2013) .....is it too late or too early or just the right time?

2. When i contact the recruiter, how do i go about letting him or her know that i am in dental school at the moment and so cannot start military service/training straight away, and how do i make mention of my interest in applying for the scholarship?

3. If i don't get the scholarship, am i still required to join the military since i already applied to join?

Sorry if my questions sound really naive, I'm only trying to gain an understanding of how to go about this. Your help is appreciated.

You want to talk to an officer programs recruiter - they should be able to help or at least they'll know who to call.

If you don't get accepted then there is no obligation.

Thanks in advance for your help.

First off, you may want to speak to a Navy or Air Force recruiter, and not an Army recruiter if the AF or Navy are the branches you want. 😉

If you are accepted, your only obligation in the regular school year is the 21(?) day active duty time during the summer, unless you go to a year round school like UOP.

The contract is scholarship money in return for military service. If you don't get the scholarship, you're not obligated to serve.

You'd speak specifically to a health professions recruiter and make them aware up front you're interested in the 3-year HPSP scholarship to pay for dental school

3. If i don't get the scholarship, am i still required to join the military since i already applied to join? Not at all in any way
