This discussion will reveal what sort of qualifications you need to get in to an MD program with less than a 3.4 gpa if you are not part of an under-represented minority group.

1. Where were you accepted?
2. What was your cumulative GPA? Science GPA? Post Bacc?
3. Hours or relevant info. regarding volunteering/shadowing/clinical experience/research
4. Distance traveled (Did you tell admissions you overcame extreme hardships?)
5. Anything major I forgot.

I'm pretty sure there were similar threads asked before. Try checking profiles in MDApps. Maybe that should help?

This cuts to the chase.

URMs have TWICE the chance to get in with a lower gpa, according to a graph on SDN. It's just a waste of time to read pages of long posts and then find out at the very end that it doesn't apply to your situation.

You shouldn't apply with a sub 3.4 GPA unless your a URM your wasting money

I got accepted to one school so far, invited to another interview next month, rejected by four pre-interview, and am waiting to hear from five others. White male, 3.17 cGPA, 3.3 sGPA, 38 MCAT. I've worked full time in the medical field for five years.
Every applicant needs a selling point, and every applicant has something holding them back. Everyone gets to decide which they're going to let direct them. Some like to be directed by broad generalizations, I guess. And it's "you're," not "your."

First of all, the only reason why you even got interviews is due to your MCAT. Being white and having a 3.17 cGPA leaves MOST people in really bad shape. I'm not saying you are wrong, but instead you should realize you are an anomaly in a field of other applicants that don't receive the same luck you did.

Chill out. The MCAT certainly was a big help, but you don't know this person or their application and pretending that you do is just arrogant.

I understand why we need URM representation in healthcare, but it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth when URMs can get into medical school with such low GPAs...

I mean I bust my ass to get above a 3.8 but others can get away with having a 3.3-3.4?? k

Dude you forgot that being URM makes you suddenly unable to achieve As! Most schools don't allow URMs to get a GPA above 3.4- what a tragedy
 
I wouldn't have responded if I'd known that this was going to be a debate about URM. I'm not well-acquainted with the big topics around here.
Is this like the affirmative action debate, where white people complain to one another (or to everyone anonymously online) about how unfair it is to be white? Rather than actually trying to understand the roots of the issue? I just don't get it.

Let me sum it up for you.

ProAA people believe that we should have AA (aka institutionalized racial preference) in order to promote better healthcare for underprivledged populations since the notion is that all URM physicians will do primary care in crappy neighborhoods.

AntiAA URM people don't agree with this and think that racial preference in admissions is racism towards non-URM candidates.

Just so this doesn't turn into a race war, note this: Justice Clarence- an African American judge himself stated that AA shouldn't exist.

This institutionalized racial preference is sooo insignificant. Take a look at how many minorities are even admitted into schools, with the exception of URM oriented institutions. You know which ones I'm talking about.

You're completely correct, there are less URM matriculants in general, however, that doesn't make it right. If 10 people get shot in a city of 1 million per day is that suddenly insignificant too? There are better ways to promote URMs to become physicians

No one is accusing you of being a racist (btw, it's a faulty argument that a concept automatically becomes non-racially charged because it is supported by people from different races).

Better to calm down and think about these things one at a time without adopting an "us vs. them" mentality.

First question: Do you believe that the playing field is fair without AA, that it is equally easy for someone growing up as a member of a social minority to make it to medical school as it is for a member of a social majority? If so, then that is the end of your argument, as that is the only premise you need. If not, then the questions follow: Is this a problem? Should it be solved? How can a problem of inequality be solved?

Idk it really doesn't matter. URMs have to jump through other hurdles that ORMs don't have to face.

I've meet certain Hispanic people that have bragged about how they party and don't have to study because they are URM... And these are rich Hispanics mind you. This kind of thing is what I have a problem with.

I agree with you, its unfortunate when the privileged URMs that dont work as hard because they expect its an advantage, but to be honest there are not very much of them compared to the total URM applicants.

According to the AAMC around 2000 white and asian applicants manage to each cycle. :wow:

In any case, I'll bid this thread adieu since this has rapidly reached the point no return to anti-URM thread #59284 the latest AA thread and as a rule, I don't engage in those extended pointless rants debates. Best of luck.

Then why not just remove the whole "skin color" part of it all and instead use, I don't know, social backgrounds and finances?

What about URMs with decent grades? 3.5+?

Why do people complain about URM admissions but are OK with the fact that getting a 3.8 at one school is cake compared to even a 3.3 at another? It's all fair as long as you're getting the advantage right? 😉

If you're accepted with a low GPA there are a few plausible reasons:

-You went to a very competitive or grade deflated university (if you don't back this up with a solid MCAT then you have no point of argument however)
-Your MCAT causes priapisms
-You have that "X" factor. This could be "diversity", connections, or a few other things.
-You had incredible research and ECs (and hopefully numbers weren't too low)
