Hello all,

I am currently in university with Biology major. I had done only Biology I.
I found myself have a little hard time to full understand biology courses.
Someone told me, she never buys or reads the textbooks for any biology courses ( Bio I, II. Genetic, Biochemistry, Microbiology) and she does very well on Biology. She only reads power-point slides and quizzes her understanding. By doing this, she does very well on Biology tests no matter what courses they are.
However, some told me, they rely on textbooks. They would fail if they just read the power-point slides for biology courses.

Please share how you study for biology and any techniques!
Any responses are much appreciated! Thanks everyone

Depends on the teacher. Some teachers only test on the ppt slides and say to use the textbook as a supplement. For most of my teachers I didn't really use the textbook.

My professor I took for Bio I, nothing of the tests came from power points. All from the textbooks, if you don't read and understand the material. You'll fail... Sucks to be me last semester,

Ask around about your specific professor for each course. Some professors exclusively test on what they talk about in lecture, some test on assigned reading from the text, some do a mix of both. For the most part I didn't use textbooks, I transcribed lectures in class and memorized them.

I'll second this. That's how I take notes - I try to write down everything the professor says. Most professors will make a ppt available sometime before the lecture. Print it out and bring it to class. Everything the professor elaborates on, write it next to the bullet on the ppt. Go home and transcribe everything into your computer.

I like this method minus the transcribing.

Oh, I don't do that, I just know it would work. My cell bio prof recommended because it forces you to reread, rewrite your notes. Sounds like a good idea, but I am way too busy (read: lazy) for that.

Get the "good" bio teacher. Go to class. Meet with the professor and introduce yourself. Participate by asking questions, etc. Did I forget to mention go to class?

Seriously in 3 classes I had borderline As in they would always end up giving me an A. Comp II was probably the hardest class I took bc all the deeper meaning bs, but the teacher gave me an A when I should've had low B at best. Plus u wanna get to know these professors bc when it comes time to apply a couple of them will be writing u rec letters.

In case I forgot to mention it, Go To Class!

Your best bet is using other resources/books to learn the concepts. Give yourself plenty of time. Start studying early. Make sure you consult more than one book, Cambells, Freeman, Adava are a good start.
