I cant believe this has happened to me but
let me explain my situation.
I am a second yr student at the u of a(in canada)
i am almost done with my 1st sem. Finals, i have the last one tomorro.
I am an average student with b+'s, b's and a few a's.
This morning i just checked my micro biology mark and i just did so bad! (our classes are curved) i dont know how this happened because i was on class average before the final.
I am very depressed and feel like there is no purpose in life for me.

I am embarrassed of myself, because i still cant believe this just happened.

Note: I was in micro 265( 2nd yr micro class)--> however everone else in that class was in 4th yr. My uni does offer higher level microbiology courses. And i want to go to new england so micro is a pre-req for me.

I don't know what to do, please if someone has experienced something similar or has any suggestions on what step to take next please help me out, i would really appreciate it.🙁

And just for those of you that are thinking i am a non-serious student, since sept i study 7 days a week 7-8 hrs daily.

Please help me out here.

It is NOT the end! Do not worry. While I am not sure how your school works, the best bet is to retake the class. Most schools allow you to retake the class if you have lower than a C. When you apply to optometry schools, the application will replace the grade if you retake the class at the same school, or if you retake the class at a community college, for instance, it will take the average of the 2 grades. I received 3 C's in chemistry and retook all of the classes at a different college, and OptomCAS (optometry application) weighed out both grades and included them in my GPA. If you are able to, retake the course at your school. The optometry application FAQ's states:

Q: If I have taken a course more than once, does OptomCAS take the higher grade?
A: OptomCAS will take the most recent grade received in a repeated course whether it is higher or lower than the first time it was taken. If you have a repeated course, enter the first grade in the College Courses Completed but leave the hours as zero. Indicate the course type as Regular. Enter the hours and grade for the course that was taken most recently to replace the repeated course. Indicate the course type as "Repeat."

I hope this helps, DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED. BAD GRADES HAPPEN TO GOOD STUDENTS.

Chill out man, it's one class, I go to university of Calgary and mount royal. I had a A going into the final and I came out with a B, **** happens sometimes u know, it is what it is, there are worse things in life than messing up a course, worse case scenario is that u retake it

i feel like someone just stabbed me a million times in the heart. And just for those of you that are thinking i am a non-serious student, since sept i study 7 days a week 7-8 hrs daily.

Are you serious?

I would suggest a session or two with a therapist. And I'm not being glib about that. If getting a D on an exam or in a course is enough to make you feel like there's no purpose in life for you and that you want to stab yourself in the heart a million times, you've got issues.

Life is going to deal you a lot more ****ty hands than a D in a microbiology class.

You better learn some tools on how to deal with that.

just retake the class and let the past be the past... I dont know how many times I could have made a post like this when I was in undergrad.. haha..

Woosaaa... Breathe.. Relax..

Honestly man, if your studying 7-8 hours daily and not getting straight A's something is wrong, you are over working. I find that the majority of students that say they study excessively like this, don't actually "study". Yeah they sit down, do some questions, and read some stuff, and learn absolutely nothing because it goes in one ear and goes out the other.

I only study the day before a test, and most of the time the day before a final (except for organic chem 2, I took 3 days to study for that final). I have always been a B+/A- student because I study efficiently, my methods of studying are much better than I'd say 90 percent of the pple in my school. I think you are over working and over stressing yourself to the max.

Your young, your in university, enjoy yourself!!! you don't need to be spending that much time in your books. Study efficiently and have a social life. I did the same thing with Organic chem 1, I had a A- going into the final, I failed the final, finished with a C+, and decided to retake it. Its not the end of the world mate.

Hi! I'm also a Canadian studying at U of T.
Don't worry I've done terribly in two classes in my first year too but once I knew what I wanted I never let that happen. Plus it's the general picture/the trend that counts -- everyone has their down times right?
Like others said, retake the class and it's no big deal. I've done badly in my prereqs but my higher years are a lot better and I have a great OAT score.

I think the main thing you should consider at this point is not that particular class, but to find out what have you been doing wrong. If you have studied that much for one class and did not receive a mark proportional to it, I think it really speaks for your studying style/habit. Does this happen to all microbio related classes? Is this because this area is your weak points? Or you just don't study effectively in general? When you go to higher years and in professional schools, the material is going to be so much more and if you cannot find a good way to study efficiently, it's going to be a tough road.

Ok- you sound a lot like me. You are way too tough on yourself. I study no different than you, and trust me it happens to the best of us. You end up feeling stupid for quite a while, and it takes a long time to recover from but you shouldn't take it personally! Retake, just chill out. Don't forget- the American schools know that Canadian undergrad is brutal in comparison. I have heard rumors on here about them inflating our gpa by a few tenth points, but even if they don't bump up our gpa like that, they will for sure be more lenient for a few lower grades. They honestly don't care if you get a D or F in a class, it's about cumulative GPA and they won't even look twice if you do well on retake. (take in the summer or something and ace it!)

wow relax please it is not the end of life as you say. like everyone else suggests, just retake it. plenty of people get in with Ds and sub 3.0 scores not saying that it's LIKELY but it def happens across the board. just do your best and make smart decisions ur almost guaranteed to get in somewhere.

I dont know how schools in Canadia work, but you usually can retake the class. I believe optomcas just takes the higher of the 2 grades you scored. before optomcas i know the schools had their own way of calculating GPA and they still may do this on their own once they receive your transcripts. sometimes schools take the average of your 2 scores... etc. so calm down, you will be ok.

I also agree with the comments above, if you're studying that much and not getting good grades... you probably should work on your study skills. maybe get with some of the kids that are rockin' A's in your classes and get tips on studying.

thanks guys
i took some time to think and your suggestions helped me a lot, i thought that optometry skool was like 'one strike and your out' that's why i was so worried cause i thought that if you do bad in one class then you cant get in.
when i think of the fact that, some of my close friends want to do optometry and they are straight A students it makes me feel like average students like me will never get in.

I know many "average" students that get straight A's, it all depends on what you consider as "average". To me GPA in no way is any indication of intelligence, it is an indication of your work ethic. If you work efficiently and hard almost anyone can achieve an A in a class. I know a few extremely intelligent students in my class that have less that a 3.0 GPA just simply because they aren't motivated and just don't really care about putting in the effort. Just cause you did bad in a class doesn't mean your not as intelligent as others. I am currently the president of a Student Research Team in my school and the last people I'm going to pick on my team are the straight A students. Do yourself a favor and stop stressing, don't be afraid of going out on the weekends cause you have a test the next week, go out and enjoy yourself, trust me, you'll be happier and do better in school.
