Hey guys so it's my second time applying to dental school! The first time was rough and I have high hopes for this time (well not really, but praying for the best! :xf:) I pretty much know why I didn't get in last cycle, both my GPA and DAT scores were pretty low 🙁. I didn't even get an interview.👎 But I retook my DAT again this summer and improved my scores!

GC: 17 26 😍
OC: 20 22
RC: 17 16 (FML...so many tone questions, i always sucked at this)
QR: 17 17
PAT: 19 18 😡
TS: 18 22
AA: 18 20 ( I HATEEEE RC!!!!!!!!!😡👎)

Now I know theyre not Sdn material but hey i was quiet proud with the science, if only rc and qr were a little better...but no point crying over spilled milk. I didn't post a breakdown because I don't feel my scores were good enough, but if anyone has any questions, ill be more than happy to answer them. I also called all my schools and some said that they will count the highest in the subjects, and most said they will look at my recents. This is my GPA:

Inc +/- W.o +/-
BCP: 3.44 3.48
Science: 3.35 3.37
Non-Sci: 3.8 3.85
Overall: 3.56 3.59

It's not the greatest but it has greatly improved since last year. I regret not working hard enough in undergrad had I known from the start how hard and competitive this application process is. You never know until you experience it I guess. I had a 2.94 my freshman year first semester (went through a lot of personal issues) but it just kept going higher and higher every semester. I think I made dean's list every semester after. So anyways, Since I graduated college in may, I studied for my DAT. I just started a Grad program at UMDNJ NJDS in which I get to take actual dental school classes with the dental students. It's a great experience. I really hope to get a 4.0 this school year, because now I know how to study etc. I have many many hours of volunteer + shaddowing hours. Plus I have research work, and I also got published! Also, one cool thing about me is that I am two years ahead in my school years. I had just turned 19 when I applied last year and this year I have just turned 20. Can this be why they didnt consider me? This cycle I have applied to 23 schools. Here is a list:
-UOP
-USC
-Collorado
-UCONN
-Howard
-Nova
-UIC
-Midwestern at Chicago
-SIU
-Louisville
-Tufts
-BU
-NJDS:xf::xf:
-Buffalo
-NYU
-Columbia
-Temple
-Pitt
-Meharry
-Houston
-NSU (Roseman)
-VCU
-West Virginia

I am a Canadian citizen, but I have gone to school here my whole life, but I am considered an international student because my dad works here so I am here as his dependent. I know this really brings my chances down a lot. I really just want an interview to show them that I too have the drive and zeal just as much as anyone. I spent a lot of money. A LOT for this application process and I will be crushed if I don't get in, or even get an interview. Please tell me I have hope. Please. Most importantly, I applied June 3rd! And I had everything into AADSAS in by early July, I think the schools had my application by then. They were just waiting on my scores which they got in August. My application says under review everywhere but im just freaking out every five minutes. I keep looking at my email, even on the weekends LOL. But pleaseeeeeee reply!!! send me your honest opinions, good or bad, PLEASE. thankss for taking time to read this novel

heres the good and the bad.

good - improvement in DAT and a masters program that will boost the gpa. the fact that you submitted early was smart, now its time to wait. you probably have a shot at the newer schools and the other ones might look at you but its tough to tell now.

bad - low RC score (might be below cutoffs for some schools) and international student (some schools take very little or no international students.) (if you have 0 interviews so far, thats not good either because most schools have sent invites to applicants that were in the first few batches.)

i know i told u what you already know, but use predents to see what happened in the last cycle to applicants with similar stats as yours.

70% chance if you are black
35% chance if you are not black

btw how did u start your masters at age 19?

so then i guess i only stand a 35% chance..
and i was always ahead in school by a year, my whole life, and i finished undergrad in 3 years because i want to be a dentist, and i know dental school is 4 years!

thanks for the replies guys!

1st: there's virtually no way to quantify your chances as a percentage, especially based on race
2nd: 70 + 35 = 105 so that's just plain stupid.
3rd: keep your chin up, it's still early

thanks a lot, esp about the third point

Honestly with your improved scores and your good gpa and you doing a masters program I don't see why they would not give you an interview. In my opinion you have like an 80% chance of getting one.

To OP:

Mind I ask if when you applied last cycle, you at least got any interviews?

GJ on your DATs though, scores are pretty solid 👍

I have to get to class so I don't have time to really evaluate your "chances" but bottom line is, only admissions knows, and everything from SDN are just speculations and only speculations that mean, well, pretty much nothing. It is a confidence booster (or demoralizer...) though

And why would those two percentages necessarily need to add up to 100? 🙄

Nah, but I agree. OP, it's a bit late but your stats are above average and you seem to have applied broadly enough to warrant at least 1 or 2 interviews. GL.

Actually, I would say 95% + chance if OP was black.
With those stats and "under-represented" (blacks/African American) OP would get into Meharry without a problem.

With that said, I don't know why OP would apply to Meharry if he/she WASN'T black. Seems like a waste of money to me.

Good point..even though I'm black, I just can't see myself applying to Howard or Meharry 😕

Nope noo interviews 😳 but i had a bad GPA and I applied pretty late. thanks!

I definitely don't think I'm qualified to "evaluate your chances" but I hope that you do get in somewhere! Good luck 🙂

I was asking because your scores from last year is essentially a carbon copy of my current scores, and I have a lower GPA than you do now (not sure what your previous GPA was last cycle since you didn't post, but it can't be THAT different) and I have 2 interview invites.

Just wanted to ease my own nerves to see if I actually have a chance at these schools , or they're just inviting me to help me sleep better 😎 haha
Hopefully the former....:luck: Why am I laughing?

Good luck though👍 Like I said, your scores are solid. However, another important factor that comes into play is, when did you apply?

If you are applying now, your chances are I would say maybe 50/50?

If you applied early, like back in June or July, I would say 90% with those scores!

But, who am I to say, I'm no admissions officer. Just keep your :xf: like we all are!

haha you are very fortunate! i hope you rock the interviews and get in! its super stressful! i think I didn't get an interview because I am an international student? and I applied pretty late. But this time, I had everything ready by June 1st and I applied the first day the cycle started. The schools had all my information since early July, they were just waiting on my scores which they got on the 24th of August, so now my application is under review everywhere!

Someone needs to create some countdown clock...

Someone needs to create some countdown clock...

I feel like this could make things worse ironically. Seeing a countdown of exactly the days/hours and such will make people really freak out.

Beat me to it!

If I had a countdown, I'd be staring at it probably for 10 hours a day. 3 hours for class. and the remaining 9 hours "sleeping" aka watching the timer in my head. Not a good idea.

hahaha i cannott wait for dec. 1st to come, yet i dread it as well!! it was like when the harry potter deathly hallows 2 came out. we're all in the same boat. today i was pretty bummed so a friend told me to call all my schools and speak to the counselors, and about 5 said that they dont have a huge out of state ratio. About 50% of the remaining said they wont discriminate between instate or out of state and the others just said that i will be considered out of state...boy did that relieve me a little.

A lot of schools say that they do not discriminate and consider OOS.
However, some will lie. Numbers do not lie.
While it is good to have some relieving words to calm the nerves, I would recommend checking the ADEA book to see what % of OOS they actually interview and eventually accept + enroll.

You may find out things you didn't know or the counselors didn't tell you (for better or for worse...)
I can look up a few schools for you if you'd like, but if you want to see all the stats, I would just get the book (I think it's $35 or $45?) or I know someone put up a PDF with all the stats.
