Optometrists are the nicest people I have ever met but I have a problem with the attitude of some of their office managers. This lady, the general manager, told me that she doesn’t need a college degree since she already MANAGES bunch of doctors; that’s the truth since except her and the main doctor, who owns the building and…, nobody else has a say on matters. She considers us students, unnecessary people who delay the patient flow. She doesn’t know how hard it is to get in the optometry school since she has never been in college. It took literally two weeks and 200 phone calls to get her to talk to me on the phone and even consider me for shadowing, funny thing was the doctors were more than willing to help me and all were excited about my passion for optometry. I can tell the whole experience was worth it, but dear doctors please inform your staff about all the hard work we put in order to get to the optometry school so they would be as nice and cooperative as yourselves. Thanks🙂

I don't believe in office managers so no problem here! 😀

You should really be careful. Just because someone doesn't have a college degree, doesn't mean they don't know what they're doing. This goes for anyone that you work with or talk to. Generalizations like 'she doesn't know how hard it is to get into Optometry school because she has never been to college' are hurtful, ignorant, and belittling.

Of course, office managers should be nice if they are working customer service, but the real point is to get the best person for the job. Perhaps it is more important for this company to be a no-nonsense, organized smooth running machine, and that she possessed the knowledge and experience to get that done. I'm not saying that how she acted was right, just don't judge so harshly because you don't know all the details and history. I guess I just fear that you will become one of those doctors that feels they are better than the people they work for because the suffered four years of optometry school.

As an aside, my mother never went to college, but trust me, she could do the job she was passed up for (because she didn't have her bachelors) because she had been doing the job for 20 years!

PS You have had one experience, but I can say with certainty that there are going to be times where the OD is the a$$ and the people who work for him or her are as nice as can be.

Well said, Swiftiii. You are obviously a very kind person.
