pls enlighten me regarding certifications

hi,
I was exploring the other options which an FTD might have apart from 2-yr DDS and I cam across certifcations which some univ are offering,I have a few questions ,anypne who knows about these pls share your knowledge.
1.Is it easier or more difficult to get into these courses compared to DDS??
2.if you do the certification from virginia are u allowed to practice only in virginia or all 9 states which accept certification??
3.once you finish your certification in two years are you regarded at par with someone who has done his residency in the same field??

any other information pertaining to this would be helpful.pls tell about pros and cons of certification.
