please help in this question
Which cardivascular changes occur when changing from standing to supine position
1- decrease in contractibility
2- decrease in total peripheral resistance
3- dilation of large veins
4- increase in pulse
5- increase in renal blood flow
the controversy is between chouce 2 and 4

When you stand up, the effect of gravity causes a decreae in venous return, so to compensate for that you increase TPR. Thus, I'd guess you'd decrease TPR when laying down = choice 2!
 
Fellas, the question is what changes when changing from STANDING TO SUPINE. Thus pulse decreases, not increases. I also love the answer "D" hehe...

I agree with the psychopath.
 
thats an exact qbank question (just had it) except for the inversion of standing and supine.. (which results on d) even the answers are the same, in the same order.
maybe the op meant it that way?
 
TPR increases. BP increases and this is the mechanism. the answer to the question is likely 3, since I dont think RBF increases when supine.

I'm not sure I agree with that.

Mean arterial BP doesn't increase necessarily. You get a fluid shift toward the head, fooling your aorto-carotid baroreceptors that your MABP has increased, inducing a parasypathetic response -> dilation of vessels (decreased TPR), decreased contractility, decrease in HR, and purging of fluid (very slightly INCREASED Renal blood flow secondary to withdrawing of sympathetic tone). Astronauts show all of these effects due to the cephalid fluid shift seen in microgravity. When they come back to Earth, they're fluid-depleted from being "supine" for months and can't maintain a normal BP without massive fluid-repletion and mechanical assistance. That's how I remember it from the aerospace phys texts. Someone back me up on that.

That would mean that answer 4 would be the only INCORRECT one. So I think maybe the OP copied the question down wrong.

i am confused between dilation of veins and decrease in TPR
 
I guess it can be simplified even further, by autonomic branch responsible for the effect:

1- Parasympathetic
2- Parasympathetic
3- Parasympathetic
4- Sympathetic
5- Parasympathetic (in the right context)

Going from standing to supine induces a parasympathetic response, hence it causes 1,2,3, and 5 to an extent. But definitely not 4.

That's why I thought the question is wrong. If you switch "standing" and "supine", or instead say which "doesn't" occur, then it would make more sense.

I went back to the Q-bank question.. If you switch standing and supine with what the op originally posted, it matches the q-bank q exactly, which has only one answer: D. I believe the op accidentally inverted these 2 positions.
