I was wondering if anybody here has done a military elective in PM&R at Walter Reed? I was wondering how the experience was and what the hours were like (call, weekends, etc)? Any info you could give would be much appreciated. Thanks very much.

Although I am not a resident at WRAMC, many of the rotating residents at NRH come from Walter Reed, particularly for SCI and TBI rotations.

They seem to really enjoy their experience at Walter Reed. Most of them comment on the excellent teaching, outstanding relationships between residents and attendings and the high scores they achieve on the SAE. After working with many of them, I have found them to have an excellent fund of knowledge and they have been great to work with.

I know this does not directly answer your question, but the residents are any reflection of the program, the rotation experiences must be excellent.

I did my ADT/rotation at Walter Reed in PM&R last Sept (2003)
WRAMC PMR is fantastic. The attendings were excellent at teaching. Most every resident I met was down to earth as well as extremely helpful.

I lived on the Walter Reed campus. It is ok, I would have rather worked the system and lived in a hotel off site (you get reimbursed for the hotel if there is no room on post...its all about timing)

My rotation:
1st 2 wks - Inpatient consult service. Do PM&R consults, write notes on patients. The Consult resident I had was a great teacher and helped me figure out what to do. My inpatient attending was Dr. Gambel-also great

2nd 2 wks - Clinics. Much different fromt he consult service. Closer to a musculoskeletal clinic. The attendings are a plenty and all good. The assoc director Dr. Foster is a fun guy to work with. You will see all of the attendings patients and present to them. So know your management stuff

The Program Director is a good guy. Dr. Pasquina is his name. He oversees the clinic and all the didactics. He WILL ask students questions. If you know them that is just a bonus. Many times he asked, the students didn't know, the interns didn't know and the 2nd yr residents didn't know. So don't feel pressured to know everything.

If you are HPSP - PMR is now competitive. At one point there wer 9 people looking at PMR in the army. there are 2-3 spots at WRAMC every year. The USUHS guys have a leg up on HPSP (points, etc)

I was deferred out for residency in PMR. 2 people got a spot at WRAMC. Rumor mill has it that no one else received deferrments. Take the rumor for what its worth though. I would have loved to match there

Good luck

Thanks husky...I'm sorry to hear you didn't match. Just curious about 2 things...
One, how were the hour for PM and R at Walter Reed...i.e. daily hours and call schedule?
Second, where did you wind up matching and how is it going?
Thanks again.

Hours at WRAMC were definitely doable
there by 7am most mornings
things don't get rolling until 730-8 however you probably don't want to stroll in after Dr. Pasquina (PD)

Inpatient -- I was there until 5pm-6pm regularly
Outpatient -- 4-4:30pm

obviously if there is a run of consults/patients those hrs can be longer
No Call
No weekends

Just relax and enjoy the environment. Not sure who the chiefs are this year. The ones I had were awesome to hang with, plus helpful
The expectations are not ridiculous, you gotta remember that a lot of USUHS students use PMR as a blow off month, so if you know even the tiniest bit, you'll look good

-I appreciate the condolences for not matching to WR
I am doing my intern year in STL, then off to the frozen tundra (or close to it)
University of Wisconsin (madison)

Good luck

Hey husky, one other question. WHen you say nobody else got deferrments, what does that mean? were they forced into GMO or were they given transitional spots? Or do you just mean that you were the only applicant who did not match?
Just wondering. It seems very competitive here (i'm here now) and I'm not sure where I'm gonna be next year. Just trying to get some info as to what might happen considering there's a good chance I won't match here.
Thanks for the help...

Like I said....only a rumor-- from people I know who applied/are already training at Reed.

What i heard in Sept/Oct was that there were approx 6-9 people applying for PMR. 2-3 of us were civilian (i.e. HPSP) the others were USUHS.

2 students received linked intern spots for PM&R
I received a 4 year deferment for PM&R

I heard through the grapevine...no one else got deferred.
Ask around at Reed. Heck, ask Dr. Pasquina or the Residents. Find out what the numbers truly were.

anything else?

So if there were 6-9 people who applied, 2 people accepted to the linked spots, and you got deferred, what happened to the other 3-6 people who applied?
Sorry for being a ******* here, but I just want to clarify.
Thanks again.

I have no clue
like I said in the earlier post...ask the the PD at WRAMC or the residents
