Can somebody offer some specifics on this as to what would be the daily procedures/treatment PMR sports doctors offer? I've seen a lot of information on sports PMR, but it tends to be vague and unspecific

Procedures would be injections mainly. Joint injections in older athletes. Tendon and ligament injections in many athletes. Most injections with steroids. Some Prolotherapy. PRP is popular right now, but who knows if the science behind it will hold out.

Otherwise, it's diagnoses, ordering imaging and prescription of meds and PT. Making the proper diagnosis is the most important thing a sports med doctor can do

Does the PM&R doc do any of the PT?

Why would a PMR doc do PT stuff? Not cost effective. Especially when one's group has PT as an ancillary.

There are lots of PM&R sports docs and many pm&r only sports fellowships. We can also apply to Primary care sports fellowships.

Although some primary care sports fellowships don't allow pmr applicants

What is the benefit of doing a sports fellowship through pmr instead of through internal/something else? What does this route bring to the table for a sports doc that internal doesn't as far being marketable/what one can do?

EMG's, fluoroscopically-guided spine procedures, extensive prior knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy, physiology and kinesiology to name a few

Other procedures that PM&R sports seem to have jump on are per cutaneous needle tenotomy. Regenerative medicine such as ACP PRP and stem cell line therapies are becoming more mainstream as well.

Don't forget you can get trained in accupuncture as well and offer that as an ancillary. Some who have the knowledge do joint manipulations etc.

I recommend anyone interested in sports med attend AMSSM or ACSM meeting in med school or residency. Great way to learn what is all out there in the sports world which takes on all different shapes and sizes. PM&R is number two most represented sports group but can be different practice opportunities than fp sports or ed spirts etc

continuity clinics and OB coverage. some just traditionally take from FM only
