would love to see a deans chat video of all of them in 10 years..
They’ll probably be wildly successful like most of our SDN attendings! Remember - most of you make $300-500k plus per year. But that was another thread…..
Ep. 328 - "Inside the Western: Innovation, Education, and Disney Magic" with Christy King & Devon Glazer
Ep. 329 - Naomi Schmid "Physician Coaching and the Art of Realignment"
In this episode of Dean’s Chat, Drs. Jeffrey Jensen and Johanna Richey welcome Dr. Naomi Schmid for an open and personal conversation about medicine, burnout, coaching, and finding alignment in both career and life.
Dr. Schmid shares her journey into podiatric medicine after discovering the profession during a gap year following college, and reflects on how meaningful patient relationships became a defining theme throughout her career. The discussion also highlights the influence of mentorship in shaping generations of podiatrists across decades of training.
Ep. 331 - "From Student to Surgeon" - The Inova Residency Experience with Drs. Rose and Anjum
Student Recruitment, Marketing, and the Future of Podiatry - Drs. Pascarella and Andersen
Student Recruitment, Marketing, and the Future of Podiatry - Drs. Pascarella and Andersen
I watched this. Too much fluff. I think there are probably some good people with good intentions. I liked that Dr. Anderson said not everyone wants to be a surgeon and we need to build the profession for those people. The fact of the matter is that is not what the schools advertise. That is not what gets butts in the seats and so there are competing ideas and factors.
Preparing the Next Generation: The Class of 2026 Journey to Residency
On this episode of Dean’s Chat, Drs. Jeffrey Jensen and Johanna Richey reflect on the incredible journey of the AZCPM Class of 2026 as students transition from podiatric medical education into residency training.
From awards banquets and graduation celebrations to clerkships, research, leadership development, and board preparation, the discussion highlights the many moving parts involved in preparing future podiatric physicians for successful residency placement and long-term careers.

It's great that Jenson is getting paid by Apma and the university to produce these videos, edit, find guests, post and promote them here and many other social media. The Apma and many pod schools clearly have launched a high cost and time investment into social media marketing campaign and income surveys and other attempts as applications are down for podiatry with many new schools added. That is fine and good. It's America. It's good that SDN lets them advertise these here, but it's also good they are in one thread area and not spammed all over as they were prior.
However, because one podcast creates frequently, it does not mean that other podcasts (and perspectives/opinions) do not exist and should not be welcome here. It is a discussion forum... things will tend to get discussed. SDN was, and is, designed for pre-med and med and docs to have all angles, views, minimal censorship and commercial bias (from schools, industry, etc). If the Apma or podiatry recruiters, such as Dr Jenson, want an exclusive and one-sided presentation, that is their YTube page... with comments turned off or edited/moderated by the channel creator.

Well said. Podiatry 2026 looks much the same as Podiatry 1982 (year I graduated) with the exception being an incredible increase in student loan. Many years ago, I saw the quote regarding podiatry advancement, ""educate not advocate." Parity (whatever form it takes) will only come about through enhanced podiatric education and a stronger student population. I don't think Dean Chat is addressing either.Nobody here is going to do this. There is no gain. I have replied in greater detail, but you request it deleted. 🙂
It's pointless to participate and support and lend any credibility to propaganda if one doesn't agree regarding the attempt for more pod students/schools/ agenda. Sure, anyone could make time for it if they deemed it important or in their own interest (see below types), but it would just get edited or not published anyways if it didn't help the narrative. So they're "busy." Naturally.
The podcast is a recruiting tool. It's a marketing thing. It's many thousands of dollars and hours spent. Maybe it's semi-successful? It is what it is. So, you will continue to have guests mostly being:
- Apma fan people and podiatry school faculty (benefit financially from recruiting, sponsor the podcast, job security),
- residency and fellowship directors/faculty (think they can attract residents or fellows, promote their program, or be 'famous'),
- podiatry students / residents / fellows (believe they can/must make connections or otherwise gratify "leaders," promote their school/residency)
- various organizations and employers and corporate and industry people (benefit from work of DPMs or rely on DPM members/customers)
- possibly other social media people (trying to get more views and exposure for themselves)
Good luck in your endeavors. Most SDN users don't fit those molds. It's great you find propaganda and marketing so important.
That marketing is basically zero by MD schools, so you will likely get called out on it from time to time. Nothing new.
People have disagreed here on SDN about best pod schools, residency types, scope, boards, jobs, ebm, and 100 other things in the past. Nothing new.

I disagree with you on this sir. Dr. Jensen has dedicated his life to this profession. His endeavor is altruistic in nature. To insinuate there are ulterior motive is offensive to myself.
Podiatry is a gift that keeps giving. I am sad you do not see this Feli. I help heal people everyday with my hands. People come to me from all over my city, seeking my services out. I have one of the most successful practices in the country. I trim calluses and nails better than most salons do, and do it in an effective, patient centered way.
Granted, I do not have the retirement accounts or net worth of some of the people who are greedy and only got into this job for money. My true value is in the satisfaction I bring patients. After I trim the callus and they can walk out the door with a smile on their face. That is why I do this. EMOTIONAL ROI. There are some things worth more than $$$.
I have been in this field for 15+ years now and I will be very close in the next 1-2 years of paying off my student loans. Does this make the field a bad ROI? That's subjective. I can tell you the fulfillment I have achieved is tremendous. I know I am not foot and ankle surgeon, but being a podiatrist...is good enough!
I look forward to my future episode on Dr. Jensen's podcast when I payoff my loans in the next 1-2 years. We appreciate everything you do from the bottom of your kind soul Dr. Jensen.
Thank you

So there you go that's where the money's goingNobody here is going to do this. There is no gain. I have replied in greater detail, but you request it deleted. 🙂

These are Such a waste of time.
How about you hit the ONE topic we all want you to. Finances.
Deans chat vs. Caleb hammer financial audit or white coat investor or literally any financial institution that puts out information.
Explain to them how going to podiatry school makes sense FINANCIALLY.
First off, because it would be funny. Second off if you think you could make an actual case for podiatry it might help your “student recruitment crisis”

Or keep spending millions on recruitment with no success.

The dark path of medicine (DPM) is a pathway to a career some considered to be financial suicide.
The financial burden and ROI should be investigated and addressed thoroughly. Future students need to know about the oversaturation and terrible job market to even consider podiatry.

Both of those “studies” were created to circumvent the student recruitment “crisis”. How is it that the mean pay for a podiatrist is 450k when anyone can hop on a job search board and see that 95% of podiatry job postings are 150k associate positions - this is what mid levels get paid these days.

I just refuse to believe you guys think that students aren’t applying because “they haven’t heard about podiatry yet!” “We need to spread the word!” “Hidden gem in medicine!”See the Marit and ACFAS compensation studies on the other threads.
Like for hells sake go talk to 3rd year residents across the country and see what job offers they’re getting. Then maybe you’ll understand, and maybe even have some empathy for the poor suckers carrying 400k in loans on their way to make 150k.
Mathematically they are ruined.
STOP. Look at ANY private equity podiatry associate contract. Be disturbed. I promise you its 100-125K offer. That is where the majority of graduates will be working and be gettingSee the Marit and ACFAS compensation studies on the other threads.

Great to have a guest on that isn’t afraid to speak his mind.
Lee has been on a few times, great insights and easy to interview! We’ve had our share of guests say, “this may be controversial but here’s my thought”, particularly around the current state of the profession, residency training, and recruitment of students!
