Hey guys I have been lurking for a while and I would appreciate any advice or things you guys know on this subject. I noticed that OCPM has a week long summer internship program available. Does anyone know anything about this program? Would you reccomend it? Do any of the other pod schools offer the same type of summer or pre-pod type programs? Thanks a lot!

NYCPM has a summer program.

I was looking for something on their website and couldn't find anything. Do you have a link for it? Is it just a basic hands on introduction to podiatry and NYCPM? Have you heard anything on the program? Strengths, weaknesses? Thanks!

Temple has a summer program too.

DMU is considering starting an internship program.

I think that they are nice to get exposure to the profession. But remember that they are a recruiting tool for the schools. They are not allowed to interview students until the Fall so the intership programs give them a shot to recruit before that time.

Hello all,

I completed the Temple internship over the christmas break, and it was a good overall experience.

Feel free to pm me for more info.

for info go to NYCPM and click on contact us send an email asking for info on the summer program.

or email [email protected] for info. This is Lisa Lee's email. She is the director of admissions.

The program is 1 month I think maybe longer. It has some basic science classes to introduce you to the course work you will be doing 1st semester if you matriculate. There is also some shadowing in the clinic.

The Ohio internship program was excellent! Shadowing at the on-campus foot and ankle clinic, attending classes, going to the VA and another local hospital, "helping out" in the lower anatomy lab, and more. I definitely recommend that you look into it.

By the way, if one has their online application (not positive on placement test scores)to pod schools completed, then Ohio will interview you at the end of the internship if you want to. I did the internship in January and there was one guy who interviewed for this upcoming fall's class. There were a number of interns who interviewed the session before mine as well. I think they will interview you during the June and July internship sessions too...even though it is very late in the application cycle.

Someone who did the Temple internship mentioned that you could interview for the pod school while at the internship.

Does anyone else know if they interview during the summer intership? I am assuming you had to pre-apply. They don't interview pre-pod students that have not applied, right?

I've done the Temple internship program last summer, and they offered to interview you ahead of time. Also, that interview would count as the real one. I decided not to interview since I wasnt interested in goin to Temple, but from what I heard the interview was relatively painless.

Is that the pre-matriculate course you are refering to?

Even though you don't have an interest in Temple did you find the experience to be a benefit? What did you do in the program?

Interesting...

I think they're a great way to learn, but you might be just as good shadowing a couple local DPMs (find a mix if you can: old, young, hospital DPM, private practice, etc). That way, you don't have to travel to the school, and it will be more of a real look and not a possible recruiting ad.

If you live right by a pod school or the pod school you would like to attend offers an internship, it's probably worth your while.

The thing that was cool about the winter Ohio internships is that you spend the week in the house/apartment of a first or second year student. You get some experience seeing the life of a pod med student and what it involves/entails. Also, you are able to attend classes and lower anatomy lab, shadow 3rd and 4th year students, have presentations on housing/admissions/fin aid, meet some practicing podiatrists, visit and shadow the pod services at the VA and another local hospital, etc. There is A LOT of freedom with what you want to do and see at this program. Ex: some students attended a surgical skills class while I spent the afternoon in the foot and ankle clinic seeing a partial nail alvusion, post op surgical patients, and more. Another intern spent the day tagging along with first year students to get a feel for their schedule, classes, overall daily life.

The only real expense is airfare and a few meals. There is no cost of the internship itself. Ohio pays for your taxi to and from the airport, provides lunch everyday, and covers a dinner or two as well. Your student host will most likely take you out to a few restaurants too (depends on your host but mine was awesome!).

I didn't really see much "selling" of the school the week I was there. The recruiters were very friendly people, did not overally push OCPM, and did not say bad things about the other pod schools. The program seemed to focus mostly on exposing the interns to the field of podiatric medicine and what it has to offer.

Another really cool thing was I was able to talk to a large number of students (1st to 4th years) and get their genuine opinion of the school, city, experience there, and more. I was curious about students likes/dislikes of OCPM, what made them choose this school over others, etc.

I had an awesome time at the OCPM internship. After completing the program, I was positive that I wanted a career in podiatry. I also learned a great deal of information about the school itself. I think its a very good opportunity for someone to learn more about podiatric medicine and I'd definitely recommend it to others.

PM me if you have any specific questions relating to the internship.

I think it is the same course. Some students have to take the class and do well to matriculate, some want to learn more about NYCPM and podiatry, some want to get back in the habbit of studying before starting school again.

I thought the program was very insightful. Most of the days you were brought to different DPM offices, hospitals, and practices. You also took a day within the Temple Foot Clinic in one of the various departments, such as wound care, a surgery, etc. They also had mini-lectures regarding different aspects of podiatry, for example sports medicine, emergency care, and how to take a patient's history. We also had a casting session in which we would create a lower leg cast on our partner, and we would have to saw it off as well. Of course throughout the internship, there was alot of propaganda for Temple, which was expected. Aside from podiatric aspect of the internship, we were taken sightseeing around Philadelphia, trip to the museum, and a minor league baseball game. Outside of school functions, we went to bars, which some people got wasted.
The whole experience did reinforce my choice in a career in podiatry, and it also revealed the many aspects of podiatry not generally known to normal folk.

anybody know the hours of the program at NYCPM? is it everyday during the 6 weeks? any information would be great! thanks in advance!

The program is from July 19th 2007 until August 17, 2007 -- 6 weeks. It's $700 + room and board.

The application says it has three areas of study: Intro to clinical sciences, Intro Clinical sciences, and Learning skills.

As far as daily routine, I'm not sure. This is all the info that I was sent.

Yea Temple has a summer internship program which is from June 1 to June 8th and focuses on biomechanics, biomanipulation, general lower extremity anatomy as well as the basics of gross anatomy. Ive talked to the admissions director and said that the program will involve us students in making rotations with Temple residents in their foot clinic as well as making rotations in the Temple-affiliated hospitals in the area (which is extensive--considering its in Metro Philadelphia). The program will provide you housing, as well as a tour of the city when given time. The deadline for the application process was on April 14, 2007.

Hope to see you guys there this summer! 👍
