the "internships" are basically marketing opportunities for the schools. they are trying to convince you to choose their school.
I guess you could say it gives you an advantage. If you are an idiot, they will figure it out sooner or later, whether at the internship or the official interview. If not, then lets put it like this: If all other applicants start out on third, this lets you lead off a few steps.
