if anyone can answer the following questions for me it would be greatly appreciated:

If you are a podiatrist do you have to perform surgery? Or does this depend on where you choose to work (i.e. if you decide private practice do you have to perform surgery at like hospitals)?

Can you specialize in a certain field of podiatry (i.e. is there a ped. podiatry)?

i am really new to this and am trying to find a source for all info/or book to learn about podiatry as a profession as well as admission into podiatry school - can anyone recommend any books?

thanks for all of your help!

There is no law that dictates that anyone HAS to perform surgery. Obviously that's an individual choice, once you finish your training. However, during training while in school and during your residency, surgery is a vital part of that training.

Once you finish that training, it's simply your choice whether you'd like to perform surgery or practice non surgical podiatry. As I've stated many times on this site, in our large practice, one of our partners (who IS board certified by the ABPS) decided to no longer perform surgery a few years ago. He is extremely busy and one of the top producers financially for our multi-doctor practice.

I personally don't know of any book that will answer your questions. I would recommend shadowing a practicing podiatrist and visiting the website of the American Podiatric Medical Association for the information you want.
