So I just wrapped up my last year in school in PA, and matched into a local program. Part 3 boards were coming up (June). Things are good.

I find out my sister who lives in CA is having some problems and needs some help so I look into moving out there with her. Apply to a residency in SoCal thinking if I could get into one, I could move there with her and start my first year residency there instead. I get in to the program and think "great, now I can help out my family and continue my training."

The SoCal program will not send me my contract until I get released from my program I was matched at. So I talk to the residency coordinator, tell her my situation, and make an appointment with the Director. The coordinator tells me its no problem and just write something up and submit it to make it official and they'll release me. This is about a week after I was informed by the SoCal program I was accepted.

I email/call SoCal telling them I'm released. No response - they give me the run around saying they'll get back to me.

I'm officially released from my matched program, and the SoCal director just called me and said I got released too late and they offered the position to someone else.

Now I have no residency. It is past the deadline to apply for the part III boards so even if I could convince my old residency to take me back, I can't even work there since I didn't register for pt III since I thought I was moving to CA.

What should I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm totally stressing out.

I don't know how to tell you this, but you asked. You rolled the dice and lost. Without you being able to take part III, you may have to try the whole match thing again next year and hope for the best.

totally suck up to the program you just got released from? do they know your situation and to why you was moving out there? maybe they will be feeling gracious..... hopefully my positive thoughts on this will help you out haha

GL!!

Thats what I was thinking as well - and thank you for your response. I was hoping there was some other option, but at this point I may be resigned to doing just that and losing a year.

I'm still holding out faint hope that if I send my registration materials today for part III, it will be accepted, but we'll see how that goes. And even then, I'll still have to be re-accepted, so its still a long shot.

DrGonz - I'm in the process of doing that right now. They know my situation, but I also would understand if they did not accept me back after they already released me. I appreciate your positive thoughts!🙂

Wow, tough situation and hopefully you've learned a very important lesson for the future. NEVER, yes NEVER cancel a contract, professional relationship, employment, etc., until the NEW contract, job, etc., is solidly sealed and delivered.

With what's happening with the match and some students going without any program, you were lucky to get two when some were getting none. As Kidsfeet said, you gambled and unfortunately at this point fell short.

However, I'm not sure you really gambled incorrectly, you simply didn't play it correctly. As you already know you jumped the gun by getting the release prior to having an OFFICIAL committment from the residency director in California.

😎

Its what I do best.

Hope everything works out, keep us updated!

how did you apply somewhere in SoCal after the match when no CA programs scrambled?
