Here is an interesting tidbit of info:

Apparently some competitive residencies use a point ranking system. It goes something like:
(out of 30 points)
3 pts for being an American Citizen
3 pts for graduating from an American Medical School
3 pts for AOA
3 pts for USMLE > 230
3 pts for 'outstanding' Dean's letter
3 pts for 'outstanding' surgery clerkship
3 pts for 'outstanding' medicine clerkship
9 other pts for things I can't remember

(out of 20 pts)
Interview aggregate score

So 50 pts total. They sum your score, and rank you accordingly.

my source must remain confidential for fear of reprisal, but I swear to you it is 100% true. I can tell you it is regarding a prestigious categorical surgery residency on the east coast.

Chances are most people that apply to a "prestigious categorical surgery residency on the east coast ' have 3 points for most of those areas. I'm not sure how this makes a big enough difference in candidates to do much weeding. Get any extra points for better board scores, publishing, Junior AOA, etc. ?

I think that publications were one of the other categories.

as for weeding people out, students with the above stats will *not* get weeded out. They will be no doubt be ranked, unless they screw up the interview.

I'm sure LOR and rotations at that institution come into play too...
