If on the DAT they ask you how many polar bodies are produced during the production of one viable egg, do you respond 2 or 3? The first polar body doesn't always divide (why would it?) so not sure...
1st polar body is produced when oogonium (2N) mitotically matures into primary oocyte (2N) and splits off a *somewhat large* polar body, the primary oocyte is arrested in prophase I of meiosis I until puberty.
2nd polar body is produced when primary oocyte (2N) meiotically divides into secondary oocyte (N) and splits off a *small* polar body that always dies, and the secondary oocyte is arrested in metaphase II of meiosis II until fertilization.
The 3rd polar body usually comes from mitotic division of the 1st polar body because it is rather big.
Hope this helps! PM me if you need more clarification.
