Police release video of Tulane medical student shooting

I saw that story. As much as I love that city, it's got a lot of random violence that happens. This actually happened in a relatively safe part of the city too (Garden District).

If NO is anything like Chicago is now, the "safe" parts of the city tend to be the worst for armed robbery.

Good to know that he's expected to make a full recovery although PTSD etc is always a possibility

I subscribe to the sentiment of "Never get in a fight with someone who has less to lose than you"
While I fully agree with your sentiment, this situation isn't like some dick-measuring bar fight. As mentioned already, Peter Gold made a snap decision that it was worth putting his life on the line to stop a potential rape/murder, and that kind of heroism is worth celebrating.

So because he is expected to make a full recovery lets joke about it? Curious what do you think that 'full recovery' looks like? It's not like he's getting up and walking out of the ICU today or anytime soon. To say nothing of the toll this will likely take on his psyche. The injuries he sustained were extensive and he has quite the road ahead of him to that "full recovery." Yes he's on the mend and so hey its time to throw out some humor--for what purpose?

I'm aware of the dark humor in medicine but I guess I was hoping for a little more discretion and tact. But hey the news says its all good, so go right on ahead with your comments which are pretty banal anyway.

I hope it's not getting to that point, although I wouldn't be all that surprised. I know the magnificent mile in Chicago has been pretty bad lately, but last time I was in NOLA it wasn't there yet. Hopefully it doesn't get to that point :/

Eh, the Mile is actually fine, and has like 3 cops on ever corner most nights. Rahm Emanuel and Gary McCarthy (Police chief) are smart enough to make sure the tourist areas are well-blanketed because the only thing worse than a crime problem is media attention on a crime problem.

It's areas like anywhere in Lakeview that's not in the immediate vicinity of Wrigley Field where people need to be extra careful. Anywhere with a lot of entertainment options that are only populated by locals. The area is under-policed and the local idiot kids looking for free cash all know it.

I hope that f.... scumbag spend the rest of his life in prison... 20-30 years in prison is not enough IMO because that scumbag will be out when he turns 40-50 years old... The recidivism rate is high when dealing with these monsters.

I am extremely upset after watching this video!

Yes, I think it's ok to make humor at this guy's expense. And here's why.
I don't care about him.

I have a finite amount of caring in me. And there is bad stuff happening to people everywhere, everyday. I can only care about so much of it. At some point I have to not care. I couldn't function as a person if I cared and felt bad on an ongoing basis about all of the bad stuff that happens. The more removed I am from a situation, the less (in general) that I care.
So when I read this story and saw the video, I thought "wow, that sucks. I feel bad for that guy." And then, after a few moments, I moved on. There are other things in my life, other people I have to devote my caring to. So I don't feel bad making jokes about the situation. You think it's crass because you still care about it. Jokes about Darfur are crass to the people who care about the genocide there and not to other people; jokes about hunting whales are crass to the people who care about the whale population; jokes about abortion are crass to people for whom that's an important topic.

My caring pie is divided up amongst things other than this guy. So I'll make light of the situation and not feel bad about it. You can continue to get butthurt about it... but (surprise surprise)... I don't care about that either.

Seventeen people were injured Sunday night (Nov. 22) after gunfire erupted during a block party at Bunny Friend Park in the Upper 9th Ward, New Orleans Police Department officials said. EMS transported 10 victims to area hospitals, and another six arrived at emergency rooms through private conveyance. Monday morning NOPD said a 17th victim had been confirmed.

That's gonna look great on his resume!

that is just a sick thing to do! I hope he gets whats coming to him

The real irony is if that student was one of the "I can't wait to treat the under-served and inner-city population"...

If I were him I'd be like F*** that, Dermatology and rich suburban folks here I come!

The way I see it it, I would always want more people like Mr Gold in my community. It's easy to criticize, but taking actions where one may pay the ultimate price on behalf of another person you've never met and do not know? That's just someone with a good heart.

He's extremely lucky to be alive. Looks like the gunman had every intention of killing him.

At the same time, New Orleans is a dangerous city. Right up there with Detroit/St Louis/Camden for the most violent crime every year.

Gee, I wonder what those cities have in common - say, demographically...

New Orleans Police response time average is 79 minutes
Urgent “Code 2” calls now take police nearly 20 minutes on average to reach the scene.

This student saw a woman getting physically dragged down the street and he did the right thing. If any of you think calling the police is a viable replacement for actually stepping up to help someone in need then I found you some friends:

😉

if this is what you think, everyone might as well carry a gun too

also wear body armor and a helmet

the dude was lucky enough he didn't get his head blown off

I'd rather dodge a few bullets than live somewhere where PF Changs is the closest you can get to good Chinese food.

It's been a while since I lived in Chicago. I was there when the flash mobs were a problem, and the Mag Mile was a target area at the time. I'd still consider Wrigleyville a semi-dangerous area, but potentially getting in a fight with some drunk a**hole is a lot less dangerous than getting confronted by someone in one of the gang-heavy neighborhoods.

Yeah, the whole flash mob thing has more or less calmed down (partly because of the police presence nowadays). We had the same stuff in Philly when it was in Chicago as well. Though mostly it was just random stupid vandalism more than an issue of people's safety.

The problems in Wrigleyville aren't so much the drunk bros nowadays as it's teenagers and 20 somethings from outside the neighborhood coming in to rob people because they know they can find easy (usually drunk) targets. The kid who was murdered this summer during a robbery for his phone was killed by a guy from West Humboldt. You also see a lot of arrests in Lakeview from people from south suburbs like Homewood and Harvey who come into the city for some mayhem.

Though as I alluded to in the other thread on this topic, Chicago is about to get very "interesting" in the next 24-36 hours.

Uhh why can't you have both? Yeah plenty of suburbs are close to cities and have great ethnic food. Just live in norcal or socal.

Gonna take a wild guess and say Latvian blondes, ages 16-34. In my neck of the woods, they are overrepresented among robbers and rapists. The blonde on blonde violence is out of control and wrecking their neighborhoods. We put them all on Medicaid/WIC/dole rolls and give them preferential med school admissions, but it doesn't seem to work. The only plausible explanation must be discrimination. My Latvian friend can't walk down the street in her yoga pants without some cop putting her up against a wall and patting her down.

And this exactly is why doctors can't have nice things.

If you don't give a damn about a kid who nearly lost his life doing something heroic, especially a kid who put in years of blood, sweat, and tears to join the medical profession, and may/could have his dreams of becoming a doctor dashed, then you are exactly the type of doctor that NP lobbyists, hospital MBAs, insurance execs, and government bureaucrats love.

I care... I just care for a very short time and then go on to care about other things.
I would care for longer if, say, I lived in New Orleans
I would care for even longer if I went to school with this guy or knew him directly somehow.
I would care for even longer if I was related to him
I would care for even longer if I was him.

My time to cessation of caring is apparently shorter than yours on this topic, just as yours is shorter than mine on others (say for example, that my kid fell today and skinned his knee; I'm sure I'll care about that far longer than you do).
