My cousin is a high school senior in the US. He is interested in entering a Polish med school right after graduating from high school in a 6 year program. I am actually attending med school in the US, but I was wondering what people thought of the Polish med schools and how US citizens that go to med school in Poland are received?

Thanks.

Hi, I'm not really sure. I have met Polish med students/doctors before and thought they were fairly impressive.

i'm an m1 of the 4 year program at uj in krakow and i love the school. i often hear some of the upper years mentioning that while clinical skills are often shortchanged, the technical medical knowledge is very well represented, and i can say that so far the program has been very demanding. the americans in the program are very well recieved, but that said, they are not babied. if the profs even get a whiff of slacker your friend is done.
on another note, clinical rotations in poland are not as limiting as in the us. med students get a lot of practice doing things that med students back home only dream about because no one in poland sues yet, and people are for some reason more willing to help train the next generation of doctors.

hope that helps.

So are your clinical rotations done in Poland? Can they be done in the US?

They can be done in the US but there really isn't any help from the school with doing this. The University of Rochester takes in a certain number of students each year due to one of their neurologists coming to teach here. Other than this the university has no other 'connections' with US schools. So as long as you find a university in the states and get approval from the Polish professor teaching that course then you can go. I'm a 5th year student here now and it's a pain with the 6 year course since we often have 2 to 3 classes at the same time.

2 to 3 rotations at the same time? Are the last 2 years of med school in Poland clinical rotations as they are in the US?

Sorry, I was speaking from experience with the 6 year program. For instance, we have surgery for most of the day with 2 hours of clinical biochem thrown in twice a week...and this is what makes it difficult for us to do rotations away. But the 4 year program is set up just like in th US, last 2 years are all clinical with no overlapping courses.

So are you a US citizen? Why did you choose to go to school in Poland?

I'm a US citizen and decided to come here to get to know the Polish side of my family better

Polish clinicals may be a tad bit hard. Due to language barriers between you and the patient.

I personally wouldnt do the 6 yr program.

Your cousin will be considered a FMG, so he/she may not be able to get competitive residencies.

It would be fine the only problem is graduating from HS then going directly and living in a foreign country could be hard. Most Polish schools are accredited and prepare for USMLE. I may study in Poland for medicine espically if my grades suck. I know some polish and my grandparents speak polish. What med school is he looking at?
