hey guys!
nice to see lots of people on this board getting good news as the accepts roll in.

lets say u sent a deposit to a school that made u do so in order to hold a spot there. And now if you aren't going, how do you ask for your $ back? call, email, letter?

" I will be unable to attend X med school . ummm that $100 you cashed, - can I have it back?"

i really can't think of anything better...

i think the deposits are nonrefundable. but it can't hurt to ask. just dont have high hopes about getting it back.

I thought that most schools deposits were refundable before May 15. They understand that you get multiple acceptances and don't hve to make a decsion until then. I would just write them and tell them that you appreciated their offer, but decided to go somewhere else. You are letting them know early so that they can continue to fill their class and would like to have your deposit refunded.

I believe most deposits are refundable. It should say somewhere in you acceptance packet/email/etc. Just send an official-looking letter saying after careful consideration you have made the decision to attend another instituation. Then say, "I would appreciate it if your office could please send a refund for my $100 or whatever amount deposit; my current address is listed below." then sign your name and address and mail it. This is not a big deal, med schools deal with it everyday and most likely the person reading your letter has no idea whatsoever who you even are.

i've withdrawn from several schools and just emailed them requesting my deposit back. Since schools (at least the ones i withdrew from) agree to refund the deposit before May 15th, they emailed back saying that they would send back my check within 4-6 weeks. hope this helps!

I never even requested deposits back; I just sent letters of withdrawal. In every case, I received a refund.

It isn't bad to ask directly for it. But I also never mentioned the deposit and always got the money back. Schools have to give it back if you let them know before the May deadline that you aren't attending their school.

It's suggested that schools make deposits fully refundable before May 15th, but they don't have to. Call anonymously & ask the school if they return deposits & then mail the offical letter saying money back please.

while we're talking about asking for $$'s back, who's with me in asking BU and Tufts for the $100 secondary app fee they robbed us of!
