In addition to being highly-involved in politics back in college, I also wrote a book while I was an undergraduate and it was published. (10 years ago)

I'm going to mention my political involvement as a student on my application, but I have decided to leave out the part about having published a book. I'm not sure how much this would help anyway, but I assume it would be a "plus" on my application.

With that said, the book contains some pretty politically-charged rhetoric which doesn't reflect my current views now as an adult. The book also however is partly a biography that highlights my struggles as a youth, successes and achievement in overcoming obstacles and reads like a self-help/motivational guidebook for students on how to apply, finance, and succeed in college.

So what do y'all think? Leave it out because of the few politically-derogatory paragraphs, or include it because I'd think having a published book is a major accomplishment.

It's not like the AdComs are going to read the book, but even the title is pretty blunt and explains the book, so just mentioning it immediately "puts it all out there" so to speak.

Dont mention it. If it gets brought up give it a good spin, how much effort and work getting it published was and then talk about how your political views have changed and how you are now using that same effort/work towards X now.

I would avoid talking about politics in your application and with people at medical school. You want them to like you. This would be my advice for you in any kind of professional setting, you really have no idea what the other person or people are thinking, you do not want to make enemies.

I'm reminded of the Billy Joel song "Angry Young Man". One line goes: "I once believed in causes too; I had my pointless point of view...'

I think that if 10 years have past and your app shows that your more, well, circumspect and mature, that this can be forgiven. However, a published author (unless it was done by a vanity press) is a rarity among applicants, is be prepared to be asked about this, if you disclose this.

If you want to PM for a more personal view, as if I was looking at your app and knowing the title, that's OK.

Thanks guys for the feedback and @Goro I really appreciate your offer of assistance. I'm 99% sure I'm going to leave it off.

Like I said in my original post, my views are completely different now on a lot of issues. Actually, I'm about as non-political as one can be now...so I don't even have any interest in defending the book if it were to come up in an interview.

I just wasn't sure of how much (if at all) it would be an app. booster if I did mention it. I guess if it were a book about osteopathic medicine, or healthcare in general, then the answer would be obvious.
