hi ppl
i am just keen to know if a correlation exists between high scores ang goljan rapid review
after having gone through a lot of posts on various forums i found that almost all those who used goljan rapid review for path got a two-digit score >90

I actually don't think there's anything special about Goljan... although he is pretty great.

I think the correlation is between anyone who spent the time going through any review books. Plus, people who read up on which are the best books to use and stuff like that tend to be achievers in the first place. I think that kind of skews the results for a poll like this. Same way it seems like the SDN mean is so high on standardized tests. It's not that joining SDN helps you score better, it's that people who do well tend to be really obsessive and join stuff like this.

it not about being obsessed with goljan
its just a trend i noticed and i thought it would be interesting to see whether i am actually right or not
🙂

The trend is irrelevant per the reasons given by the other posters. Goljan most likely is correlated but not causative.

Why are you so obsessed with this useless question? If you like the book, use it. If you don't like it, don't use it. I'm sure there are people out there who scored <90 that used the book. There are also people who scored >90 who didn't use the book.

Considering that he teaches at OSU and not every OSU student makes higher than the 90th percentile, I'm sure there would be a selection bias if you excluded them from your sample.

Lots of people do well with Goljan --- however, it's definitely not required to do well. I stuck with BRS Path and it was fine.

Dammit people!! Don't you get it---->

Not to start a FireWar, but keep in mind OSU is DO -- and according to NBME, only 75% or so DO's pass step 1 the first time. Just a factual statement !! I know many DO students score very high. So please.. no flame war.. thank you.

OSU is also a very good DO school with entrance stats which equal most MD schools. They have very good pass rates and do just as well and increasingly better than the in state MD school. I would know, I graduated from OSU.

My original point is that of the people who use Goljan's illegal material, you are introducing a selection bias because these are the people who are looking for the edge and generally will not include the slackers (like myself) in the group and will skew the data to the higher end of normal. Goljan is an instructor, you are the tool to your own success.

i completely agree
it all ultimately depends upon how well u know ur concepts
but u see this book definitely clarifies a lot of doubts that might be there
and hence i feel this might give one an edge over the other materials

but this is my view point
others may disagree

The average DO-candidate posting in this forum seem to score higher than the average MD-candidate. Just a factual statement, so please, no flame war, thank you.

Actually, that's not a factual statement, you're just being inappropriately condescending (and incorrect). +pity+

ppl please
i request you not to start a fight
we all r in the same boat
we all r preparing fr the usmle
so it dsnt really matter wat course u undertook
all that matters is wat score u get in the REAL EXAM
so i request u to stop maligning each other🙂

I remember your score, and I remember you were one of the few who didn't use Goljan. 😎

if i recall correctly, most of the >260 scores on this site have been from people who didn't use Goljan.

i did not say that one cannnot get a gr8 score if one doesnt use goljan
infact all the ppl from my college who got a 99 had never heard about goljan

all i'm trying to figure out is what proportion of ppl who used goljan got abv 90.i am, by no means underestimating the other sources for path

Made me laugh. I feel like The Todd.

He is at a DO school 😱 I lost all my respect for him now........how dear he hangs out with the peasants, doesn't he know better that it's all about the MDs.......I don't care if you even come from oxford or cambridge with a MBBS, here in the US, we close our eyes and only respect the MDs, period.

Thanks for the information, I am sure after this hot news, his reputation is jeopardized!

Interestingly enough, I'm also at a DO school where the pathologist is quite well known and respected in the field. He was an MD that many years ago decided he liked the way DO schools were teaching. He's eccentric as hell though... maybe that has something to do with it? But way cool!

:hijacked:

Why did you even bring this up?

Also, I would question whether any school knows specifically how any other school actually does on anything.

[/THREADJACK]

I like Goljan. He's funny.

Why did you even bring this up? Have a chip on your shoulder because you attended a DO school or something? I know you are just a disinterested observer who obviously has no bias. 🙄 Increasingly better than the instate MD school: What propaganda! Oh yeah, my best bud from HS goes to OSU COM so don't think I'm an OSU or DO hater either. Different strokes for different folks.

I was accepted to both OU and OSU and choose OSU, and yes, unbiased, OSU's acceptance stats has surpassed OU's despite being a lowly DO school. Not to mention the Class of 2006's pass rates, OU's was 91%, OSU's was 100%.

But don't let a random internet forum get you down on your choice of school. There is nothing wrong with OU, I'm just tired of the state politics which refuses to treat OSU as equal in funding despite proving to be just as competent as the state's favored school with a fraction of the funding.

well i have almost finshed the book
boy it is huge
there is so much of info packed into it.....
pretty exhausting

OU doesn't post our stats on the internet, and maybe those are old, but I believe my class average on all of these areas were higher than those.

Those are old states, from 2004 or 2005's class I believe, the Admin at OSU made a big deal about it in 07 or 08's class about how they surpassed OU's admission stats.

i request the moderator to close this useless thread.

Guys, let's keep this thread on track. Here is not the place to discuse OSU and its merits. Let's stick to the topic at hand - Rapid Review and kick-butt board scores. 😀

Sorry, that was why I made my response in the first place - questioning why the thread was getting off-topic while questionable statements were being made about my school -but I kind of got side-tracked and perpetuated things. 😳
